Review 1 of 6

Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:
I have had the JBL LX55 for about 17 years now (@2009), and one of the set is deteriorating now.
I am sure that the second one will follow soon...
The rubber gasket around the woofer is dried up and litterally falling apart, leaving the cone unsupported.
This results in screaking grinding sounds at moderate volumes, which CAN destroy the Amplifier.
(Voice coil rubbing against the metal pole-plate of the Magnet, which couses brief shorts when the insulating lackor layer is shaved off by this!)
I have run various Disco's and parties with them from 1992 till about Yesterday on an ILP HY244 (80/120 Watts) (2 seperate Modules) Amplifier, which is even one year older, and still standing strong.
But for now, the speakers are in "Background Music" Mode untill I have replaced or repaired them.

As for the qualety, It is really strong stuff!
Mobile use, even at high volumes don't care the speakers at all, since they do not even crumble.
often moved from room to room when setting up a party or disco is even no problem for these heavy speakers.
My music range varies from New age to Rock, pop, synthesyzer and Synfonic rock.

But, even for those good speakers, there is eventually an end of usefull life... :-(

As told, It is qualety material, with exeptional good bass, Good Midrange (AFTER the R12 Disconnection in the Crossover Filter) and for my taste just a little too much high.
An 8 Ohm 5 Watt Metal-Film resistor in series with the tweeter makes them a real jewel to listen to.

Off record:
I can provide pictures for the LX55 since I still have them standing in service.

Review 2 of 6

Price Paid:  $500.00 from Stereoplay

Summary:
Very 'strong' loudspeaker, but if you like classical music, forget it! You cannot ask so high SPLs and precision to a product of this price. The filter modification brings this loudspeaker to be one of the best buys in this price range.
The bass is very deep, but sometimes the male voices are dirtied because of the too high crossover frequency for the woofer and the weakness of midrange.
If you own this speaker try to disconnect the only 12 Ohm resistor in the midrange crossover network, you will never reconnect it again!...

Strengths:
Really high SPLs and deep bass, very high dynamics.

Weaknesses:
Medium range quite weak affect also precision in the bass range. Problem can be partially solved by removing a resistor from the crossover filter ;-).

Review 4 of 6

Summary:
I bought these speakers back in 1988...paid $800 US I think including Norwegian Wood stands. Great JBL sound, heaps of bass and clear sound from the titanium tweeters. I used these for mainly country and rock for about 10 years. Not a refined speaker but great for fast punchy material. Spring clips are a downer as they won't accept thick cable. Sold them to a friend for $350 for use in his surround system.
