These speakers are nice but a bit overpriced for their lower quality when compared to yesteryears RS series. The RS series was replaced directly by the Interlude series. The Interlude series also boosted their prices to high. Their performance was similar to the RS series, which was less expensive. The Alpha series was a direct replacement for the Interlude series, which bought prices back to a normal level. Prices are similar to the pricing of the previous RS series.
The Entra series and the Alpha series share similar voicing "BUT" there is a definate difference although the same drivers are used. The difference is large. The midrange is masked and muddy compared to the Alpha series. The bass is also over emphasised in the high bass making it boomy. The Alpha series lacks this boomy bass. Infinity stated that the Alpha and Interlude series do use similar drivers "BUT" the crossovers and cabinets are much cheaper in the Entra series to make them a more affordable budget speaker. The cabinet and crossover seem to be causing the high bass emphasis and the less precise midrange characteristics.
These speakers do sound good but are not a good value for their price. The Alpha 20 bookshelf speakers have the same size drivers but with better crossover, cabinet bracing and tuning, sounds 'MUCH' better and very similar to the much more costly Alpha 40 with less bass output. For the same money, I'd buy the Alpha 20's.
The Polk R series has the same sonic differences compared to their upper line RT series, as the Entra series compared to the Alpha series. Surprisingly, the Entra series has a R series twin and the Alpha series has a RT series twin except that the Alpha 50 use two passive 8" woofers and the RTi100 uses one built in 6 1/2" 'powered' subwoofer. The Alpha 50 sounded like it went deeper however.
Alpha series seemed to image better but different room placements could cause that. I didn't situate the speakers in the same position since sonically, the Alpha series sounded much better without considering imaging. Strengths:
Good lower bass output, good imaging, good tonal characteristics. Entra series while lacking to the Alphas, was slightly better than the Polk R series which had sonics I preferred less than Infinity. Weaknesses:
Upper bass emphasis can create a boomy sound. Priced high when considered to the previous RS line. Midrange could be more refined. Entra series debutted with Interlude series, which directly replaced the RS series. Similar Products Used:
