Review 1 of 24

Price Paid:  $500.00 from Leon's

Summary:
These speaker produce amazing sound. Perfect for music or home theater. The play really loud as well (up to ~117dB@200W). They have a very high sensitivity which is usually only found in horn setups like Klipsch. The speakers are very good on the low-end and not too bad in the mid and high range of the frequency spectrum. Driven by the right receiver these speakers will output clean crisp sound that is not too bright. I have used them in my home theater setup for over 7 years now and still have no reason to upgrade. I'd love to get 4 more for my surrounds.

Strengths:
- High sensitivity
- Detailed and accurate
- Strong bottom end coming from the 10" woofers]
- appealing Cerwin Vega red surround on woofer
- adjustable cross-overs

Weaknesses:
- slightly bright
- mid range driver nothing special

Review 5 of 24

Price Paid:  $280.00

Summary:
I read through the reviews below, and I'd like to point out a few things. First of all, the signal you send is going to affect the speakers considerably. If you are boosting the bass with the receiver you are going to wreck the signal and get poor bass quality. KLH speakers, from experience and study, are cheap, poorly built speakers. They are not durable and they make up for their poor frequency curve by using a crossover that accentuates the range of highs (cymbal etc) that your ear hears best. They DO NOT have crisp ultra High frequencies invariably. The Vegas have an excellent frequency response curve and incredible definition. Put these things on a good receiver and you will hear every piece of glass hit the floor in a movie. The bass and midrange are also very well designed. Including solid voice ranges and increcibly tight full bass. You may notice a distinct jump in the response curve around the 38-45hz range as the port on the speakers is tuned to that range. This, however can be excellent as it is not out of proportion and helps to fill in low fields of sound that get lost to the ear. The ear becomes increasingly less sensitive to frequencies once you slide under 80hz. These speakers are also very efficient (signal to output ratio, how much power you put in and how much sound pressure is generated). At 8 ohms they will have slightly less volume than some typical 6 ohm standing speakers. However, they are far more efficent than most speakers anywhere near the price range.
Overall these speakers are an incredible buy with excellent response top to bottom. Amazing durability and a value and reputation that can't be beat. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If they claim poor sound or distortion, it is either in the signal, the receiver, or a somehow ruined speaker. These are as clean and sweet as it gets unless you want to start paying more than 4 digits for your speakers. I'd recommend them any day.

However, if you are looking for "real-world" sound recreation, these speakers (and most speakers in production) aren't for you. These are Bass Reflex, meaning that the speakers is at least partiall driven by its own back pressure from the air behind it. If you want true acoustic recreation you need an acoustic speaker, and be ready to pay.

Only bad thing... The magnet will affect the TV or Computer Monitor over time if you don't have them far enough away, (3 or more feet I've found is good). So be careful.

What I've played through them: DVDs, various TV and movies, Car Stereo testing audio, Rap, Classic Rock, Pop, HiFi recorded Environments (birds and such specially created for high definition and realism), Classical music, and gaming environments (run off a computer system with A3D and EAX).

Strengths:
Incredible features, from digital protection on the tweeters, to switchable levels on the midrange and tweeter, and a great basket/magnet combo on the woofer

Weaknesses:
If you are using these for Home thetre at all... Hard to get near your TV as the magnetic field has an area of affect of about 4 foot radius.

Marantz MA-9S2 Power AmplifierThe list above has one tenet that I continue to hold true: high powered amplifiers are necessary to reproduce the full dynamic range of music with most speakers. This became apparent when I changed from the 100 Watt per channel Bella Extreme 100 to the 250 Watt.....
