Review 2 of 4

Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:
I have owned these speakers for a few years now, bought them new. I was quite impressed back then, but now things have changed. I was over at a friend's house last week, he had these small Audio Physics speakers, wow, what a difference technology makes ! As much as I once loved my Avalon's, I must reluctantly admit they have been surpassed by most floor-standing speakers in the under-$ 5,000 range. They still produce some pretty amazing bass, but high frequencies and specially the shortened soundstage and imaging are compromised. I think they would be a good deal to find on the used market for around $ 2,000.00, but about that level, they lose out to smaller, more modern designs. Still, a handsome speaker if you have room for it.

Strengths:
Good bass, overall nice sound.

Weaknesses:
No longer in the running when compared to newer, more modern designs.

Review 4 of 4

Summary:
The Radian HC was the first speaker designed to go with the reference Spectral/Avalon/MIT 2C3D system. I purchased this system and the overall sound from this system was neutral, dynamic, and presented a very well defined-soundstage coupled with excellent resolution. The problem was that the low-end was not deep enough for my taste. The Radian HC had high quality bass in terms that it was distinct from recording to recording and was tight and not at all boomy. However, the bass did not present me with the visceral impact that can be achieved elsewhere. The Eidolon in comparison, makes up in the bass what the Radian HC lacks. Otherwise, the Radian HC, like the Eidolon and Artemis, is highly resolving and can project a stunning holographic presentation given the right recording. From that perspective the Radian HC is one of the finest speakers out there. Ultimately, however, if you are contemplating buying the 2C3D system, the Eidolon takes pride of place above all other speakers in terms of what it can do when paired with the Spectral and MIT components.

Strengths:
Neutrality, soundstaging, build quality

Weaknesses:
Bass, while well defined, is restricted and is bested by Avalon's Eidolon.

Similar Products Used:
Avalon Eidolon, Artemis EOS Signature with base modules.

Marantz MA-9S2 Power AmplifierThe list above has one tenet that I continue to hold true: high powered amplifiers are necessary to reproduce the full dynamic range of music with most speakers. This became apparent when I changed from the 100 Watt per channel Bella Extreme 100 to the 250 Watt.....

The unit arrived from China well packed and everything seem to be in place. No external abuse by the carriers. The only problem was the power supply it came with. The box came with a cheap step-down converter.
