Summary:
I have long been a fan of the Spectral/MIT/Avalon 2C3D reference system and have purchased this system as well as upgrading the system from its original configuration. The Avalon Radian HC was the first speaker to be designed for this system. I have made comments about that speaker elsewhere. Needless to say, the Avalon Osiris, like the Radian HC performed wonderfully within the context of this system. The overall sound of the Osiris with the 2C3D system was neutral, dynamic, three-dimensional, highly resolving and musically engaging. Certainly, the bass was much more impressive with the Osiris than with the Radian HC. The Osiris took pride of place in the 2C3D system around 1995-1996. I was not able to afford the Osiris nor could I have accomodated it in my listening room. The Radian HC served me well instead. Around 1996-1997 I was introduced to the Artemis EOS Signature with base modules. That speaker cost approximately $20,000 and was a bit more expensive than the Radian HC. It was my opinion that the Artemis provided a similar performance to the Osiris but at a much reduced cost. The Artemis bass response was much better than the Radian HC and all the other qualities of the Radian HC and Osiris were present in the Artemis. Needless to say, I eagerly purchased the Artemis to replace the Radian HC. The Artemis was my preferred speaker until the Avalon Eidolon hit the scene. The Eidolon went beyond the performance capabilies of the Artemis. The Eidolon cost me $22,000 and, while very expensive, was a bargain compared to the Osiris. The Eidolon possessed the performance characteristics of the Osiris and actually surpassed the Osiris in terms of resolution. Granted, the Osiris moved more air in the bass than the Eidolon, yet the Eidolon was also able to delve into the depths and the bass produced was articulate, tight, and accurate. As the 2C3D advanced, the Eidolon, in my opinion, became the speaker of choice for this system. Ultimately, the Osiris was eclipsed by the Eidolon and the existence of and need for the Osiris was questionable to me. Avalon has since discontinued the Osiris but have introduced the Sentinel which is also in the $70-80,000 price range of the Osiris. That speaker I have not heard and I won't comment on it. In terms of the price/performance ratio, the Osiris was relegated, for me, to curiosity rather than a realistic challenge to the Eidolon. Five stars then for performance, but with the Eidolon in the picture the value of the Osiris is greatly diminished.

Strengths:
Neutrality, resolution, sound-staging

Weaknesses:
Price/performance ratio is greatly diminished by the existence of Avalon's own Eidolon as well as the Artemis EOS Signature with base moldules.

Similar Products Used:
Avalon Radian HC, Avalon Eidolon, Artemis EOS Signature with base modules.

In my judgment the advantage of the MG 1.6 (and other Magneplars), stems from the following: = It is a full-range dipole, and = It has uses low-mass, planar drivers for the whole audio spectrum. These attributes account for its extraordinary clarity, coherence, “air”...
