Wow.. These babies are a steal. I had them hooked up to my intergrated AVR before and ho-hum. They were okay. But you give them a decent signal and about 75 watts and these puppies sing. No way am I suggesting they will become your favorite main speaker, but as a rear surround. You cant go wrong. I had my adcom 535 II powering them and wow. Great Highs and Mids, low a little weak, but it only has a single 6" woofer ( Ported ). Long story short, I would have easy paid $200-300 a pair for these.

Strength:

smooth highs

Weakness:

don''t handle power well, mids are weak

Mine are the tower model. For the price...who can gripe? I bought these for rears or the bedroom, and they''re good for that. Mine aren''t even broken in yet, but they are passable. Not a ton of bass, but the voice coils are still stiff so maybe they''ll loosen up, mids are weak, highs are very "silky", but fairly accurate and pleasant. Perfect for surround use, rears, garage or bedroom. I''m driving them with an 80 wpc Marantz and that''s about all (or a little bit more) than they can handle. Quality is surprisingly good and finish is decent. Overall...a great bargin.

Strength:

look good -price of packaging is more than speaker cost. Are easy to listen to with no irritants very smooth at low and medium volumes.

Weakness:

see why they went out of business. So much for so little money.

Just a steal from ubid Sound is clean and pleasing . Are not as effecient as Infinity speakers but are far higher build quality . Packaged very well so do not worry about shipping . Combined with the LSC37 center they are sweet deal. My friend thought they were more expensive than his BOSE package. Must buy them soon . U-bid told me they have less than 50 left.

Strength:

Sound vs. Cost

Weakness:

Mid range is "light"

Again I got mine from uBid for the requisite $27 each (A STEAL)- set them up as rears to my dbx Soundfield V's with an Atlantic Techonologies Sub and a Mission 70C3 center-

By themselves they were lacking in the midrange area - but still very good-to compensate I used a pair of Atlantic Technology 152C center channels "ganged" to the five way banana clip posts and placed them on top of both speakers - now getting better sound - but I am not yet satisfied - so I get a small Sony 305 powered Sub at the rear with the incoming wiring going to the subs clip type posts and then out to the Auras - NOW I have the sound that I want from the whole system with a kickass front and rear setup. Had to turn the front and rear subs volumn down to get the "smooth-even" sound that I was looking for using the "Video Essentials" dvd to accomplish the setup. Also the sounds from any speaker get better as they "break in" and mine get better as they are used.

Sure - this all took time - and money- but the end result is very satisfying.

To round out my setup - I am using the following:

Sony STR-DB930 receiver (Another STEAL for $389 from Soundcity.com)

Sony 530 DVD (Another STEAL for $299 from Best Buy)

And watching on a 61" Panasonic High End Rear Projection TV (Another STEAL from the Good Guys for $1799)

The matched dbx Soundfield V's were $300 for the pair-

The Atlantic Technology sub was $129-

The Mission center was $199-

The Atlantic Technology centers used at the rears were $100 for the pair-

The small Sony Sub was $80-

And the Aura's were $54 for the pair-

All totaled my system comes to about $3350 with a MSRP of over $7000!!

Both DTS and Dolby Digital are "spectacular" in both sight and sound from this system - and believe it or not - I had fun putting it together.

Bottom line - the 838's limitations can be overcome with other low cost solutions such as the Atlantic Technology center channel speakers-the use of the sub is not manditory but it sure helps put the feeling in back there. Ofcourse using a setup like mine-you want to set your front-center and rears to "large" in the receiver setup.

Have fun-

Mike

Strength:

Price, price, price and price.

Weakness:

Large cabinet for 2 way "bookshelf" speakers.

I would like to echo the last review - if you are in the market for decent speakers at a ridiculous price, it would be a crime not to try a pair of these speakers from UBID. These are actually the LSB-628W (for wide, I assume).

They usually sell for about 27 bucks a piece (on UBID), but they truly sound like speakers that cost 10 times that. The bass response is outstanding: clear, crisp and no boom. I actually bought them to use as rears for surround, but they sound so much better than my (admittedly old and somewhat low-fi) towers that I have discarded the towers, bought another pair of Auras, and started using them all around.

The weaknesses, as I see them, are that the speakers are still somewhat limited by their two-way nature - the midrange is not as warm as it would be with three ways - and the cabinets are fairly large for the small size of the driver.

For the price, however, nothing even comes close - you'd be lucky to get plastic speakers for this price anywhere else.

Just as the last reviewer stated, if you are thinking about taking a chance on these speakers at UBID, I highly recommend them.

Value with audiophile tendecies

Weakness:

its large, but i think that attributes to the refined, yet assertive sound.

I got these for a set of rear speakers. I use a denon avr3300 receiver, magnepan fronts, and an M&K subwoofer. I was very please with the aforementioned components, but was having a lot of trouble finding a nice match for rears. i auditioned half a dozen pairs and never quite happy until these. (These are the LSW628M's.) I am admittedly placing them in a bit of an unusual configuration, with the maggies being the dominant output and everything else supplmenting them. The other speakers i auditioned played that subservient role fine, but these auras do it with a bit of assertiveness that i find most pleasing. They would probably be a bit 'thin' for my tastes as fronts, but i am extremely happy with their current placement.

Strength:

Can't beat the price on uBid, the imaging is wonderful and warm

Weakness:

none at this price

I am actually reviewing the LSW-828M's. They have an 8 inch woofer. I thought the bass response was crisp and powerful and not muddied until very high volume. The imaging on these speakers is better than the Polks I have and they sound very "warm". No fatigue at all. I am powering them with a Harman Kardon AVR 45. These speakers even seem to make my sub sound better. I got the Polks for a lot more money and would trade them for the Aura's. The Aura's must be placed on a stand at least 18 inches high to get the most out of them. I had purchased these as a gift, but they aren't going anywhere -- hopefully i can get another pair at $47 each (or less) they are worth double that. I don't blame the guy that doesn't want to give them to his 14 year old daughter! Aura Systems even PACKS their speakers in the shipping boxes better than Polk Audio.

price paid for a very good speaker

I am also reviewing the Aura speaker LSW-628M. My LSW-628M has a 6.5" woofer and a monopole linaeum tweeter.

I bought mine very inexpensively at a local farm/hardware/appliance store, of all places. Skeptical at first, I took a pair home to listen to for a few days based on the reviews I found here and in a periodical I consulted at the library. I tested these speakers connected to a Harmon Kardon receiver against the Boston Acoustics 6" 2-ways that I was using previously. In my opinion, the Auras sounded better than the $175 BA's before the Aura's were broken in. I am grateful to those who submitted reviews for this product, as I bought four and have them powered by a HK avr receiver and mated with a fine 12" subwoofer.

After the break-in period, they are really get impressive. They clear up and sound very warm. The highs are very clean and the lows are accurate, tight, and not boomy. I think that they are pretty neutral, and they have great soundstage. The build quality is also very good.

In my opinion, these speakers can compete with popular bookshelf speakers that I have heard that cost from $150 to $400 each. If you can find these speakers at these amazing low prices, buy them. You'll be astounded by the bargain.

Sound quality, construction, value

Like others on this page, I am reviewing the LSW828M speakers that I bought on Ubid for about $140 pr with shipping (watch out, Ubid overcharges for shipping, but if you complain, they will work with you). These are the larger non-tower version that have the 8" Polypropylene woofer and Line Source Monopole tweeter. Too bad Audioreview doesn't allow for us users to add new models to their list!

At first, I bought the pair for my garage. When I received them, I set them next to my Klipsch KSP300 to see what they sounded like. My wife new what I paid for the Klipsch and boy what a mistake it was to tell her what I paid for the Aura's. Their not quite as clear and full as the Klipsch, but I'd say their are mighty close, and I paid 10X for the Klipsch.

I like them so much I bought 4 more just because they were so impressive and inexpensive. I don't know what I'm going to do with them, but they are too good to give to my kids.

I read on Aura's web site that they were having serious financial problems so maybe they were trying to dump these to scare up some cash? Everything about them is very high quality, even the boxes and packing! Fit and finish was excellent. Like the others reviewing this model, I felt the base was full and very solid. Likewise, the highs are very clear and crisp. The only weakness is perhaps the mid range is ever so slightly weak, but hardly worth mentioning.

It's a shame that Aura doesn't have the reputation they deserve with these wonderful speakers. I think their Marketing manager should be fired as these speakers should sell themselves, all anyone needs to do is listen to be impressed.

If you are looking for some very nice near audiophile quality speakers, save your money and buy these, you won't regret it.

Cabinet "large" if sub /sat system is your goal

This review is for the LSW628's that others here have purchased at UBID.

The reason I am leaving the review is so anyone looking to bid on the units can find info and be comfortable purchasing the item.

Plain and simple for 27 bucks a speaker which will bring most people in the area of 100 bucks a pair with the shipping these speakers are "A STEAL", period!

The bass / midbass is tighter than a 21 year old dancers belly and the sonic tones of the tweeter as smooth as her voice.

In other words "very seductive".

When the speakers first arrived I was impressed with their fit and finish which is top notch. No glue spots , no frayed grill cloth. Just a absolutely perfect assembly of the product. It took a few days of loosening the speakers up before the tweeter lost what appeared to be a slight "breakup" on high cymbals and "S" and "CH" sounds in vocals.

Once the speakers broke in I was amazed at their clarity and silky smooth tight sound.

A day after I recieved them I scored BIGTIME at UBID on a 10 inch 100W KEF powered subwoofer for 127 dollars brand spanking new!!!!

With shipping the sub came out to 150. So for 250 bucks I have a sat/sub system that rivals anything I have heard up to 1000 dollars and even beyond.

These speakers reach amazing depths when you add a sub.

Bowies voice , the strum of Smashing Pumpkins guitar strings, the snap of a Phil Collins snare drum all make you close your eyes and just want to listen and keep listening.

If you want 1000 dollar speakers buy 1000 dollar speakers.
If you want 100 dollar speakers that will piss your friend off that owns 1000 dollars speakers get the LSW628's and a sub and start gettin him angry today.

This is the absolute best 27 dollars I ever spent in my life.
Don't be afraid to do the same.

P.S. They gotta be put on stands at least 12 inches off floor!

P.S.S. The KEF Subwoofer ? I almost feel like I could get arrested for grand theft getting that thing for 127 dollars!
