Summary: This review is for the Audiofile 830LR floor standing tower speakers. I paid $100 for the pair. Mine were not new, but were unused. One had been slightly damaged in shipping (easily repaired), so the original owner sold them rather than having the repair done. Before buying, I had done some research, and like so many others found that these so-called "Audiofile" speakers had been marketed in the U.S. via a parking-lot sell-from-vehicle scheme (scam). Aside from the sales scam, however, listener reviews at the time were actually very positive. When I looked at the speakers and took a good look inside, at the driver and tweeter structures, at the crossover network and overall construction, I was very impressed and bought them. After repairing the one cabinet (looks perfect now), I connected them to a vintage 185w high-end receiver. I've been impressed ever since! Like others, I've found the bass response a bit weak, but with some added punch using active equalization found that these things are capable of some awesome bass! They just need a little added low end punch. As for the guy who said that a Fostex driver alone, without a mid driver or tweeter, would beat these speakers, that guy is no pro and he's never even listened to these things! No way! The tweeters in these things are better than the tweeters in my $800 Paradigm's. These speakers are obviously built to be economilcal, but where it counts, they are built with quality and precision. Very impressive for the price I paid. They are by far the best speakers I've owned in the $100/pair range. I'm not sure if they'll handle the claimed 400 watts, but they've endured hours and hours at high volume at 185 watts, ..for 8 years now.. with no signs of overheating or distress of any kind. For what it's worth, I'm very impressed! Like any speaker, placement and equalization is important, but once you've found the setup that works, these things please my ears. My only fear is that a driver, tweeter or crossover will blow and I won't be able to find a replacement. For $100, these things are great!!! My next planned speaker purchase is priced at $1400. I hope they'll match the "value" of these infamous Audiofile 830LR's.

Summary: I have just recently purchased a pair of these infamous Audiofile 583 LR speakers. Unlike others on this site, I did not buy these from the back of a truck, van, or SUV; I got mine at a yard sale in my neighborhood for $25.00. I have been satisfied with them so far. When I saw them sitting in the front yard of this person selling them, they looked impressive and felt impressive due to their weight and size. Like others here, I immediately looked for Audiofile on the Internet and found nothing but negatives.
I have these speakers hooked up to an older Harman/Kardon receiver with an Audiosource power amp. Not having used a set of tower speakers in quite some time, I have been please with these for the price I paid.
Strengths: Weight, sound, good deal for the price paid.
Weaknesses: Nothing yet

Summary: I'vve had these speakers for over 6 years. Yah my buddy and I each bough a pair for $200 from the infamous white van in San Diego, but these speakers have held up in 5 different houses 5 cities and two states. They sound good (no bass) but with a klh sub, klh rears, and a sony amp, they make great speakers as part of my surround system. What kind of Audiofile just uses two speakers anyways? I probably overpaid (I was a dumb college kid) but I don't know too many speaker towers that last that long and still hold up. The only reason I'm not using them now is because my wifes dumb cats started scratching at them and we ended up buying a whole new amp/dvd/mp3 5.1 system.
Summary: Wow! Everyone is slamming these speakers! I purchased these used from a friend recently, and have been pleased with the value. The bass response is not outstanding, but what do you expect from some 8" woofers in a standard ported enclosure? I came on here looking for some advice or possibly a manufacturer contact, as one of my tweeters is blown, and I was searching for a replacement set. Does anyone want to sell the set that they are so disappointed with?
Strengths: They are a bargain for what I paid. I would compare them to any $200 per set speaker out there, and if I was looking for speakers in that price range, I would definitely purchase a set. Most of the floor standing speakers that are this size are $200 each or more. Even MTX home stereo equipment is more expensive.
Weaknesses: Light on the low end, and not incredibly musical, but if you are looking for some above entry level speakers, these will fit the bill nicely. Add a subwoofer to these, and you are rockin'!
