Summary:
The A652's are masters of sound reproduction for the price(under $400 for the pair, but this is for parts only!)Vance Dickason (The chief guru of loudspeaker design) did his job on this one. The bass/mid drivers are high end Audax carbon fiber cone 6 1/2's (2X in a d'Apolito configuration) with a super smooth silk dome tweet (bought from Martin Sound with the lowest price on the web - http://www.ncweb.com/biz/sound/).
In a stand alone stereo config they shake the rec room at almost 105 dBa. I havent had the time to do a freq plot yet but my ears are happy!

I am currently using a Kenwood K-VR8080 DPL receiver (bought from http://www.onecall.com/index.html for $237-they are still selling at thisprice),
2X DIY Sound Clearing House KOH1a 6" carbon fiber cone2ways(http://speakerkits.com./) with total cost under $90 for the pair,
and a DIY center channel using two of the 6" and 1X tweet from the SCH KOH1a with the cabinet doubled and a change to the X-over for about $40.

As you can see, I have built everything except the Receiver on as low of a budjet as possible but the A652 are the center of this system.
PS: I actually built these for my 17 year old son but after finishimg them I deceided to keep them in our rec room and retire my JBL 4311 studio monitors instead.

Anybody wanting more info on the A652's should go to these sites:
http://www.sdinfo.com/main.html (Go to the DIY section under kits)
http://www.audax.com (Go to the US flag and check the A652 kit)

Summary:
OK I got on the internet & looked for a speaker project. I settled on the Audax a652 desinged by Vance Dickerson. It was scary buying speakers over the net without listening first, but Vance seemed to be a guru of sorts so I trusted his reputation. The speaker kit has four 6.5" Audax hm170co carbon fiber woofers & 2 audax two250mo tweeters in a D'Apollito configuration. Building you own speakers is great fun. The hard part for me was building the supplied crossovers for each speaker. The wood box wasnt hard. The results are very pleasing 6 months later. The speakers are designed as a satellite system & needs a sub- woofer to fill out the extreme bottom end. As is, the speakers are ideal for anyone into classical, jazz, or any acoustic music. Im working on a powered sub-woofer so I can crank up the rock n roll with authority. Zylatron from NY supplied my kit & was about $100 cheaper than another supplier Madisound of WI.

Magnepan Magneplanar MG 1.6 User Review

In my judgment the advantage of the MG 1.6 (and other Magneplars), stems from the following: = It is a full-range dipole, and = It has uses low-mass, planar drivers for the whole audio spectrum. These attributes account for its extraordinary clarity, coherence, “air”...
