Summary:
I have owned a pair of Angstrom Legato "bookshelf" for more than a year now and the performance has been unwavering for all this time. When I first listened to these speakers a few years back I was very impressed with the overall sound performance unlike any bookshelf I have auditioned previously. Although it has taken me few years to finally be able to own a pair my patience has been well rewarded. The first thing you will notice taking them out of the box it the weight of the speaker, they are very heavy and solid, this is no cheap wood they are using and the grain definition is fantastic.
Hooking them up the first impression you get when listening to them is the smooth tonal qualities, right from the deep bass (yes, Deep Bass) too the high frequencies. you don`t expect good bass from a bookshelf but in the legatos case - its there. I also have a Boston Acoustics BT1100 subwoofer in the same room. Sometimes my toddler turns it off and i dont notice for days. Great bass response.
I`m can pump a lot of power into these speakers (denon optical class A 200w p/ch amplifier) so I thought I would give them a ride, to my pleasure they didn`t mind it at all, the tonal balance stayed smooth and didn`t waver, some speakers start to ring in the high frequencies and begin to loose overall definition. I played a few tracks with strings in them and was impressed to hear the resignating tones of the strings and textures reproduced perfectly from bow to reed alike.
The legatos were easy to place to get a good sound stage, making sure the left and right channels met in the centre properly. I suspect the driver design was helping with the accuracy of the directionality, angstrom designers use a vifa kevlar/fibreglass midbass driver with a phase plug. The tweeter is Focal. Another great choice. High frequesncy dispersion is wide and balanced. Phase response from 200hz to 20000hz measured only 15 degree variance with a groundplane measurement.
Overall, I cant say enough about this speaker. Even when compared to my Genelec 1031a studio monitors they hold their own. Of course the genelec's still have better bass extension, but for 6500 bucks a pair, I'll take the Legato's any day. I got mine for a steal at $1500.00 CDN

Legato is a musical term meaning "smooth". They are aptly named. Clear deep and detailed bass, phenomenally good imaging and soundstage the legato's will deliver a broad spectrum of crisp detail throughout the frequency range. Four thumbs up (my wife likes them too.)

Moscode 402Au OLT stereo power amplifier Review

George is adamant about the fact that the Moscode 402Au is not just a tube gain stage slapped onto a solid-state power amplifier; rather, it is a tube amplifier with a MOSFET output stage.

Lowther’s DX-65 driver in the Teresonic Magus XR Review

A new driver from Lowther is real news. A new five inch driver is even rarer news, so it was with great anticipation that I waited on this pair of speakers to arrive.

Aune Mini Headphone DAC User Review

The unit arrived from China well packed and everything seem to be in place. No external abuse by the carriers. The only problem was the power supply it came with. The box came with a cheap step-down converter.
