Strength:

Please suggest to me! Which amp is suitable for S50? I have also S40. I drive it with Sansui au 888 and sometime au 607, very nice. Sometime I use with Marantz 1060. I always use '' jolida glass fx tube dac dsd ''. But these amp are not suitable for S50. S50 speaker is more powerful. So, please suggest to me which amp is suitable for S50. Thanks,

Weakness:

Diffcult to chose the amp for S50

These continue to be my mains 10 years after purchase. These speakers really don't have a weakness and can absolutely electrify a room with a good amp and even more so if bi amped. The bass is tight and goes down real low, not quite as low as AR advertised but to 30Hz without distortion. Mid ranges really pop out and are very detailed, maybe the slightest hint of coloration but nothing overly noticeable. High's seem about right, not overly bright like Kilpsch that can lead to listening fatigue. Its too bad AR went out of business, this was one of their last efforts and probably the reason they could be had for less than $500 though Ubid. If you can find a good condition pair under $500 at ebay or audiogon I'd pick them up.

Strength:

Very good alround speaker for home or HT use

Weakness:

a tad bright in the mid... easily correctible.

the other review is from someone who has a tin ear, doesnt own s50s, never REALLY listened to good speaks, or all the above. The status line of AR speakers were top notch when they were in manufacture. sound is exceptional, good bass for a 6.12 inch woofer (need a sub) but a very clean and clear sound, the midranges are slightly colored, a bit bright. take the treble down to -1 or -2 and they are right on. Ive owned bose b/w polk JBL wharfedales over the years and these were the best. Wharfedale Emeralds a close second. If you find a set of thes for under 500 snatch em up.. will match sound with most $2k speakers on the market.

Customer Service

never had the pleasure

35 yrs of audio.. gone thru lots of the name brands.. actually still own the s50s after 4 yrs (just about a record for me) they just are too sweet to part with. and not willing to go $2000 any more for a set of speakers when there are some excellent alternatives for under a grand.

Strength:

good home theater speaker and fair audio sound.

Weakness:

I would have to say weakness is they are not a real crisp and clean sounding speaker but, hey, for $129 they're just fine.

I purchased these mainly because of price thru Ubid. They are decent but not exceptional speakers. I have a friend that paid about 5k for some really nice B&W speakers so I know what great sounding speakers are supposed to sound like. Anyway, these handle my Denon 3802 amps power well. I have the S50 fronts, S20 rears and the SC2 center and they make a good match for home theater. I would like to upgrade when money and my wife permits.
