Strength:

loud as hell

Weakness:

none

I have owned the 920 for about 2 years now and I have to say this is one great center speaker. I have it running with the VR 975 Lynfields which are very good speakers to.If you are thinking of getting this center stop thinking and go get this one while you can. Boston is the best speaker around period.

Strength:

Sound quality, clarity, value, looks. That great Boston sound.

Weakness:

This thing is BIG. It barely fits on my 32" TV (inches to spare on either side).

If you have VR mains, RUN to the nearest store to pick this up. Awesome! A local dealer that rhymes with sweeter is currently selling it for less than $400 NEW (I paid this much used). Replaced my previous HD424. Obviously, this is a much larger (and more expensive) speaker, but you get what you pay for. The clarity is astounding. You'll notice a big difference among shows in terms of attention to audio quality. Using with VR950 mains; matches very well acoustically and visually (actually taller than the 950's are wide).

Strength:

Sonic detail, rich imaging, impressive looks.

Weakness:

Miniscule traces of manufacturer's glue around speaker cones under the front plate. Totally harmless but when you pay for perfection...

I drive the 920 with a Yamaha VX995 5X100w receiver. When I can afford high end separates I'll see what that does for the 920. While I shopped for the 920 I used a Mirage m290i bookshelf for a center. No surprise, the 920 blew that setup away as much as the Mirage smoked the crappy built-in TV speakers. My wife who hates all electronics and the boxes they come in busted my chops for the price I paid for the 920 which to any red-blooded male is infinitely more useful money than what my beloved spends on jewelry which doesn't get any more useless. Even she was stunned by the sound of the 920. A nice test is the opening dialogue in Lord of the Rings by the ethereal female voice of Arwen the Elven princess. It will goose-bump the nape of your neck, it sounds so awesome. Like a 3-D imaged sound effect with presence like she's in the room. Also try the classic lobby battle scene from Matrix. The clinking of brass cartridges on the marble floor and the metallic clacking of the slide being jacked on the 12-guage shotgun is absolutely and totally REAL. This baby is the last component I will upgrade, if ever.

Strength:

Crisp, detailed, uncolored sound.

Weakness:

None that I can think of.

The center channel is the speaker that is most solicited in a home theater setup. That is why I opted for the Boston VR-920. It is suited to match television sets 32 inches and above. I found this speaker to sound very straight forward and clear. Voices are crisp and rich, with a good amount of detail..

Baught it to replace a Boston micro 90c that now goes to my second setup. What to say? It does what it is supposed to do. Clear dialog, good overall sound.

Strength:

Wide Dispersal

Weakness:

Little thin sounding. Lacks depth. Fried itself.

I thought I might write a review on this product if I knew enough to do so. Now I can say I do. Mine blew! I bought it in October 2001. I was impressed at the store by the open clarity and wide imaging of the unit. At home it sounded a bit thin. I couldn''t get much bass out of it despite its dual bass drivers. I eventually relaxed since that is not what a center channel is for. But you do want some resonance with your center, otherwise your sound can be more tinny than your stock speakers in a higher end TV. I consoled myself that it added nicely to the sound stage of my music. I have my fronts too far apart because of the room design, so the center filled in the gap. Last night I realized a driver had blown with my 110 watt Denon AVR3802. This speaker is supposed to be able to handle up to a 250 watt amp. So what happened. I didn''t have the amp cranked all the way and there was no distortion. My mains are only 100 Watt max and they''re fine. So beware! I''m bringing it back to where it came and looking elsewhere. Good luck.

Strength:

Clarity, range

Weakness:

Little on the wide side

I've only had the 920 a week but I'm happy with it so far. Mostly I've been listening to concert DVDs (such as Fleetwood Mac and Steely Dan) and they have a nice overall sound to them.

The high end is mellower than what I'm used to (NHT's) and I like it better that way. NHT's get a little shrill at higher volume. Midrange seems uncluttered, reproduces keyboard/piano nicely. Bottom end is great for a center channel but don't expect subwoofer performance.

The 920 blends perfectly w/ my 975's. I would guess it would blend well with all Boston's VR products.

I almost bought a demo VR-12 for $250 but was offered a new VR-920 for $400 at the same time. I have no idea which sounds better overall. Boston claims the VR-920 delves 10Hz lower to 55Hz vs. the VR12's 65Hz. The 920 is shorter but wider.

I really can't say anything bad about this speaker. I'm sure bigger kilobuck centers pump out more bass but for the price, this is plenty big enough and suits be just fine!

Sound, Looks, Price!

Weakness:

NONE!!!!

I tested a lot of centers in the under $1000.00 price range, and was the happiest with the 920. I honestly dont think it can be beat for what it cost. It matches my other Bostons perfectly, in sound and looks. Will hold plenty of power and I push it pretty good with music. I hear all new sounds from my dvd's too! The mids are exellent, and the highs are clear. I hear solid tight, impact from the drivers when movies are playing.I did not buy it cause it matched my other speakers, I spent 4-5 months compairing all my components seperatly, but for the price I have in my system I dont think the Bostons can be beat. This is just my opinion, but check them out if your looking.

Strength:

Fullness of sound, Clarity of sound, and overall performance.

Weakness:

If I had to make one up I would say its size. Although I don't mind it myself some might have a problem placing it on their TV.

This has to be the best center I have ever heard. Going from my previous setup, Bose, I now know what a movie is suppost to sound like. The VR920 perfectly matches my VR-965 fronts and is an incredible performer. The amount of bass that is produces from this center really adds to the movie experience. This speaker also features the same Linnfield Tweeter that is used in the VR-series main speakers.
