Summary:
The 514S is a spectacular bookshelf speaker. Build quality is impressive, and the faux-applewood side panels lend a sophisticated appearance. The speaker cabinets feel solid, and provide a dull thud when tapped, as opposed to a cavernous echo. The 514S has a maximum input power of 100 watts, which is generous for a speaker of its size. Most important, however, is the sound quality.

The 514S is a two-way monitor with a 5.25" woofer. Bass extension is limited, but at this size, this is to be expected. Pairing these with a subwoofer is a must for full bass response. The upside of the non-ported cabinet is the assurance of more accurate sound - without the muddy bass that some ported bookshelf speakers provide. Highs are crisp and detailed, yet at the same time controlled. The tweeter and woofer blend together smoothly to create richly detailed and warm sound. Imaging is strong, and there is much depth to the 514S's sound.

The 514S is versatile, equally strong as a small bookshelf front-channel speaker or an unobtrusive surround-channel pair. Simply put, they're excellent speakers.

Strengths:
Great sound quality, clean highs and accurate midrange. Excellent build quality, great appearance.

Weaknesses:
Bass extension is a little weak - but it's hardly a weakness for a diminuitive & non-ported bookshelf speaker.
