Finding one

This is the Best tuner I have owned. It pulls in distant stations effortlessly. The sound is very CD like which is hard to imagine until you listen to an Audiolab 8000T. The sound is warm and smooth, great musical reproduction. This really is a great classic piece of equipment. Buy one if you can find one. The controls are easy to work with, the build quality is nice (I have not had any problems). The electrical components used in construction (internals) are top notch. There are supposedly very few tuners that sound better than this one, but they are all vintage tuners and I wanted the convenience of pre-sets and prefer the look and ergonomics of this era of electronics. It is all that they say it is on the tuner reviews at www.fmtunerinfo.com and maybe even a little better. Good luck finding one, I was lucky enough to get mine like new in its original container. Well taken care of. There are only a couple of tuners available new today that match the sonic capability of the Audiolab 8000T, but they cost in the 2-3K range (Sequerra etc..). If you can find one of these, they usually sell right under $1k, so it is quite a bargain. Another keeper for my main listening system - I like it when I find keepers for my all-day system. The others end up in other rooms in my house in different systems. Bottom Line, if you can Find it-Buy It. You will enjoy it.

By far the best tuner I have heard. It seems hard tpo beieve that digital will better this type of analogue reception (as wit cd and LPs). reliability???

First class sound, sensivity, these are the main qualities of this tuner. I bought the unit second hand, the white stencil indications where almost totally erased. The unit is being working fine since last fall, where an Hydro failure, had the unit totally reset. No more FM or AM, but LW??? The thing needed à manual reset from the CPU inside, after everything worked fine. The backlights are 6,3 volts and had to be replaced a few times. The output RCA connectors had to be replaced, left audio was intermitent. Now most of electrolytics capacitors had to be replaced also. So after all this, i''m still satisfied with this tuner, but there is a reliability problem with this design. 4 stars for sound 1 star for design reliability. I think i''m lucky, because i could fix all of theses problems without a schematics, next problem???

A very "natural" sound, is the trademark, of the 8000 T.No artificial treble, or bass, here.
Only what's on the recording, and yes, it is difficult to tell,
if you are listening to a CD or a tuner.
Personally, I think the big plus of this product is, the it's
performance with "live" material, it has a fantastic ability,
to convey the ambience, of the live recording.
All in all, another fantastic product, of the AUDIOLAB stable.

This is a class piece of kit. Apart from bulbs blowing (don't replace them with LED's - the whole reason they chose bulbs in the first place was to reduce RFI!) which is an easy job to sort, the thing is hewn from rock and reliable as hell.

Sound quality is surely as good as it is possible to get from analogue radio, and partnered with a good aerial it sounds jaw-dropping. Classical instruments appear spot on in the soundstage, and the dynamics reach a level you would never have thought possible from radio.

The controls are brilliantly weighted (the tuning knob uses an aerospace spec ballrace and flywheel to get the feel just so) and the whole thing reeks of class. My only reservation is that £800 is a ridiculous amount to spend on a tuner, but if you like your radio, it's well worth it.

Amazing detail, sound stage, deep extended bass response. Excellent sensitivity and selectivity. Ergonomics King. Exceeds all Japanese hi-end tuners I have used but I have not tried the Accuphase 109 which is reported to be equally as good but about 3 times more expensive.

Display lights but this can now be made a complete non-issue by replacing bulbs with high intensity white LEDs. This should allow display to outlast the owner. Other than the display these tuners are known to be bullet proof. A very much time tested design.

Exceptional product that with the appropriate fine arts/university station (cancel almost all radio stations that are corporate owned, they are almost unbelievable junk) is clearly of pure Audiophile quality (no qualifications here). The corporate owned FM radio station's sonic quality seems to be saying "We gave you a fair Democratic 2000 presidental election and in a similar fasion we give you glorious, compressed, wallpaper sonics that have the farthest FM reach for our commercials and you WILL love it because we have made sure you have no alternative. We bought up stations tens at a time and payed off congress to take away low power FM station criteria from the FCC and given it to Congress (ruling made Dec. 2000)." I also liked the Roksan Caspian for a very wide and deep sound stage. If you need to get stations from a very far distance get the Pioneer F-93. It beats the Onkyo 9090 II, Yamaha TX-1000u and similar former RF kings. But like other Japanese hi-end tuners give very good to excellent but not exceptional sonics. I keep a good RF tuner on standby for those hard to reach university stations.

review of nad 412 tuner
wow. i picked up a nad 412 tunerr for 699 ringgit yesterday and i have not switched it off. the sound is gloriously clean and natural. voices dont have that irritating sibilance. the tuner shows up limitations of the fm medium indeed. the loud passages on certain tracks come out compressed on my set which compromises a pioneer a400 amp hooked up to a pair of rogers ls2a/2's. both tweaked. it takes at least 3 hours for the tuner to sound its best after coming out of the box.

Two and 1/3 years into ownership and the FM section dies. Deliver to Artech's recommended service shop in Berkeley, CA. It's there for 2 months until I leave a message. Return message states they can't fix it; come get it.
Double-box shipped to USA distributor Artech. MailBoxes Etc. charge is $68 for this pleasure. 4 months and several phone calls later, it shows up back home.

The AM is dead, and the unit cuts in and out on FM. Dispatch letter to Cambridge Systems. Receive phone message back to contact Artech. Artech says it would cost me probably $100 to ship to G.B. After a 1/2 year of effort, I conceed defeat at this point.

Artech didn't charge me a penny, and were cooperative. But it's clear to me that this unit is exotic and high-strung. It has some trick circuitry and at least one propriatary encapsulated module. NO ONE IN THE ENTIRE USA IS CAPABLE OF REPAIRING THIS UNIT (s/n: 210A11062)

Great control layout and features; good FM sound, AM has (er, had) a minor, weird tizzy sound - 50/50 that it's the broadcasters fault. But as it stands, it's $1200 bucks down the drain. Note the dinky little 12 month warranty. I also heard that Cambridge Systems has been sold. Wild horses couldn't drag me this way again...
