Strengths:    Playback, Recording. (The important bits)
Coax & Opt in. (most decks don't)

Weaknesses:    Reliability. No Dig. Record level (Not available at the time) or coax out (Rarely available)

Bottom Line:
Now I know a minidisc recorder isn't an audiophile piece of kit due to the compression it uses but as a musical tool it is exceptional. Ok, it gave up the ghost to the 'disc error' problem that most of them had... after 11 1/2 months... but since a fix it's been fine, absolutely zero hassle. And its been in CONSTANT use since 1996. Still one of the best sounding decks out there, better that the 520 or 530 (had both at some point) and only shaded by the MDS-JE20ES. Get one if you can, if it breaks, get another.

Strengths:    The Unit is Always on Standby ....Digital Optical & Analog connections - Smooth Clear Faithful REPRODUCTION and has NOT SKIPPED ONCE ! (PLUS ITS SEVERAL YEARS OLD !!!)

Weaknesses:    A Midi Priced Unit is NEVER going to compare with one of double the cost NATURALLY ....ERM.... No Speed Variations - but I don't think they were available at the time Any Way ?

Bottom Line:
The JE 510 Has been a FAITFUL little Unut - Custom of Sony Reputation. In regular Use - excellent Quality And Has NEVER LET ME DOWN.... Being One of The UNLUCKIEST People with ANY Equipment - I expected THE WORST and took out a 5 Year WARANTY - Going By Other reports HERE - Maybe as well I did ... Bottom Line:
This is the biggest piece of CRAP Sony have ever brought out. If you're lucky, the machine might last a year without breaking !The mechanism has just given up after a years usage and will cost $100 to repair.
This is a VERY common fault apparently.
Go for an ES model if you can. That's what I'll be doing now.

Bottom Line:
The 510 is starting age a bit now, but I doubt that the current model (530) is a staggering improvement on what was a cheap, but exceptional design.
Confusingly, this appears to be both one of the best sounding MD recorders of all time (see The PC AV Tech website for proof) and also one of the most troublesome. Thankfully, mine has never had a single problem - and I use it a lot (it stores all the audio information I use to feed my Akai S1000).

As for sound quality, I personally can't fault it (and I am very picky) when taking digital copies, and so long as you use a good quality source and set levels right, the results from the A/D convertors can be equally good. It can seem to get a bit flustered with dynamics, but this is barely noticeable, and with a DAC upgrade may well be sorted (it seems to disappear when I tranfer to my pro sampler).

To sum up: an absolute bargain (well under £100 these days)that should not be missed if you're at all interested.

Bottom Line:
Had my JE-510 since early '98. Almost in constant use, sound quality is great - this machine was voted in the UK highly for this. Can't complain - never had any disc 'loading' errors though so I've got to give it the full monty of stars... Mind you in late '97 my top of the range Sony video developed a loading fault which I identified as me only pushing the tapes in too slowly...wanted to protect my investment at the time! Since then when I load videos or minidiscs they get a good firm push right into the loading slot, maybe this explains my having no problems so far! Though if it does play up in the future these minidisc players are cheap enough to replace so I'm not too bothered. Keep minidiscing guys!
