Review 1 of 3

Price Paid:  $115.00 from Yard Sale

Summary:
Nobody listens to type IV (metal) tapes anymore so don't worry about this deck not having that feature. If you are recording tapes to listen to in your car it's a great all around deck at an affordable price.

Strengths:
Great Price, Dual Decks

Weaknesses:
No type IV (metal)

Similar Products Used:
Pioneer, Sony

Review 2 of 3

Price Paid:  $100.00 from store

Summary:
This review is for the 401, not the 201

For the price, if you use it strictly for playback it's ok. Playback is very good on this deck. However, if you're looking for a versatile deck to record with I would pass on this one. You cant use Type IV tapes, despite many competing companies like Sony offering type IV compatability with its entry level deck. I have exchanged two of these things and there is obviously a QC problem with this line. For one thing, it wobbles...one of the legs is too short and it makes the thing move around when you press the buttons. Incredibly annoying. The tape doors open even if you just brush by them lightly. The recording on all exchanged units wasthe same, fades in and out in the left channel every couple of minutes. The DPSS auto track search that supposedly allows you to FF to the next track has not worked on a single tape that I've tried. The lack of auto reverse is no big deal...i find the heads on auto reverse decks are always out of alignment on one side.

Again, for strictly playback use I'd recommend it...otherwise i'd shop around.

Strengths:
price, system link capability w/kenwood receiver, decent playback quality

Weaknesses:
left channel fades in and out on recordings, DPSS track search is useless, incompatible with type IV (metal) tapes, and it wobbles!

Old Sony decks
