Strength:

GX head still gives crystal clear recordings, even after 17 years of usage. Very user friendly design makes it easy to start recording quickly, misc. handy functions enable the user to get the most out of the deck (programs, finding songs, etc.)

Weakness:

Single electronic rec level adj. makes it impossible to adjust equilibrium problems betw. L and R during recording.
Quick Auto-reverse mechanism causes head alignment problems.
Belt replacement is very difficult, all the mechanism has to be disassembled. Had two mechanical failures since 1984, both had to be fixed by non-authorized technicians, since AKAI service was not available in Turkey. Now it is once more at the workshop, this time because the REC/PB head flat cable is broken due to torsion caused by autoreverse mechanism. Spare parts difficult to find (head/belts, etc.)

Please, if anybody knows where I can get a new GX head for my GX R-66, help me...

Strength:

Have one GX R6. Quality recording of high standard is still possible after 15 years of use.

Weakness:

Bar meter replaced under warranty after 6 months.

Just recorded TDK MA R 90 today. Its worth listening. Recording carried out on dolby C. Still today, the VU bar meter displays 100% same level as the recording level. One of the finest machines I have used.

I have a lot of digital equipment but analogue recording can be fun with metal tapes and GX R6
