I needed to follow up on my review below. My Reference 83 was a dealer demo which I got a great deal on. The new Reference 83 (and 85) have two switches on the back to customize the sound. One is for the lower treble, the other is for the high treble. Units produced before July 1998 only have the one switch for the high treble. (The non Reference Model 85 and 83 still have only one switch.)

Anyway, my demo only had the one switch, so it must have been the older version. So I E-Mailed the company and Mike VansEvers himself responded and said he would upgrade my player and add the second impedance switch for only $75. I just got it back and it makes a difference.

My hat is off to Mike VansEvers. He is a great guy with a great product.

Summary:
Have you ever noticed that the audio equipment seems to sound better late at night. One reason is the electric power does not have as much noise late from low usage.
But why wait til late to listen to music ?? The VE Reference 83 makes it late at night 24 hours a day and actually makes late at night sound even better.
I already own a VE Super Companion with is their $150 conditioned power strip. This is a great product at the price also. Well the Super Companion has a detachable power cord, so before connecting the Ref 83 I put the Ref 83 power cord on the Super Companion. Just that alone make a difference in the detail and music making.
Once I connected the Ref 83 I was in heaven. My Onkyo Integra FM Tuner is now CD like. Now when I am not listening to CDs I have the radio on all the time. Of course the improvement on the rest of the system is great also. The Super Companion is now connected to the TV/DVD/VCR and that is much beter now also.

Summary:
I recently purchased a VansEvers Ref 83 PLC for my system. It was after many, many hours of nonproductive rumination about the benefits of line conditioning and after auditioning one of Audio Power Industries Ultra Wedges. I can honestly say that with the Ref 83, the improvements across the board in my system were on par with a major component upgrade! After a week break-in I found myself tapping my foot to the music and swinging my head back and forth like Ray Charle! The pace, rhythm, and overall musicality was phenomenal.
Specific improvements in imaging, soundstage, bass extension and midrange liquidity were blatantly evident to me as well as my nonaudiophile wife. I also learned that one can tune the PLC to one's liking by altering the physical environment in which the PLC resides. See Mike Vansevers theorhetical treatise at his web site (www.vansevers.com). My systems consists of Linn LP12/Lingo/Ittok, Theta Jade/Pro Prime IIa, Balanced Audio Technoligies VK30, Aragon 2004, Vandersteen IIIa, AudioTruth Lapis x3, Marigo Ultra II power cord. The Vansevers is happy with this sort of company.

Summary:
I now truly understand what a quality Power Line Conditioner can do in improvingthe "musicality" of our hi-fi systems. I've read some good reviews of the VansEvers PLC's before and thought I'd give 'em a try.

Result: "WOW!!!!!" Could I be dreaming??? Could the sound improve across the board so dramatically for a relatively inexpensive PLC? Answer: Yes, Oh Yes...

The sound of current system (with a fully broken in MVE Reference 83 PLC) is now more quite (much lower noisefloor resulting in better dynamics), improved soundstage (more width, depth), a much improved palpable 3D imaging perspective,
but best of all improved musicality, tonality, and inner detail to the music
I have not experienced before on my rig...

I have to admit, I was so impressed I tried another highly respected PLC
with Quantum filtering and found out that that PLC also lowered the noisefloor
but just didn't possess the detail and finess of the VansEvers Ref 83 PLC,
Period! Also, the other PLC (Bybee Signature) wasn't very quiet, which
contributed to a distinctly unnatural coloration that vieled the sound too much. The Ref 83 is nearly dead quiet(must get within 3 in. to hear any hum at all). The Bybee, in other rigs, might not exhibit the problems, but in my rig I couldn't live with the sound.

Next, I added the VansEvers "Double Pandora Power cord" to the MVE Ref. 83 PLC and again, WOW!!! another improvement in detail, harmonics, overtone definition and just plain music makin' over the standard 202 MVE power cord.

The Reference 83 PLC has 2 Digital outlets, 4 Analogue output and 2 Amp outlets
rated at 1800watt max. It uses Parallel filtering, common mode filtering, IEC connector, Cryogenic outlets(indestructable and very long lasting supposidly), MOV surge protection and a transient impedance switch that "quickens" the transient speed of attack at bit (it also works!) All this for $800. for
the PLC, $450 for the Pandora Double Power cord, worth it friends!!!

I also now realize that the Ref 83 needed break-in. Initally, the sound was
with improved noisefloor, but the sound lacked inner body and detail, after
a 4 day break-in the sound just opened up naturally. This was not a subtle
improvement but very dramatic. Big smile on my face! The improvement was as big
as adding the VT100 to the system.

Highly recommended!
