Summary:
I bought this system to replace a Sony minisystem. The SD9's great looks and compact size initially attracted me to it though I felt it was a little pricey. It sounded fair enough in the shop so I bought it. Once I got home I hooked it up to the Paradigm Titan speakers I had used with the Sony system and was really impressed with the sound. The CD playback was far better than on the Sony and the radio seems perfectly good as far as my ears can tell. Then I hooked up the beautiful cherry JVC speakers and was disappointed with the sound even with the bass boost on. The electronics on the SD9 are superb- you just need speakers that do it justice. Yeah, it's pointless for most people to buy a system and then abandon the speakers but it worked out fine for me. If you do try the Titans with the SD9, then you'll find that they're a perfect match. The sound levels are actually pretty close to that of the cherry speakers, but the range and accuracy is far, far greater. Plus the Titans put out a good amount of bass for their size and the little extra mid-bass they have works well with the SD9's output so that you don't have to turn the volume way up to get some good bass response. I can't shake the walls with this set up, but I have to say that I'm really enjoying the music that I'm hearing.

Chosen for shelf in bedroom – Denon DM-30 was too deep to fit, Nakamichi too expensive. Impressed with weighty build and smart finish. Love the cylindrical speakers – real wood veneer and what look like kevlar drivers. Amazing for price. Paid AUD600 (about USD320) reduced from AUD750, and knocked out by sound quality for this money. Lovely airy, spacious sound with sweet highs, non-fatiguing, voices sound breathy and “in the room”, rock and dance tracks really pump. AHB-Pro circuit helps bass, but bass freaks will need a sub. Note the claimed 19 WPC is quoted at the rather disingenuous “10% THD”, in other words it manages 19 watts just before it explodes. However there’s sufficient punch for the intended duty. Tuner performance is nothing special – fairly harsh and transistory sound, so radio lovers should look elsewhere. I never use it so I don’t care.
Not sure about top-loading CD players – hard to keep out the demon dust. The glass flip top looks lovely but vulnerable to prying fingers – not ideal for parties or ham-fisted buddies. Low-profile design and flashing lights give it a fun spaceship look. Useful socketry – sub out, digital out and aux in although none feature proper RCA plugs, what do you expect. Clean neat styling, low button count, minimal features are all pluses with me – I hate fuss and gimmicks.
The display is dim and hard to read. Also when you switch it to clock it won’t stay there – if you change the volume, stop/start a CD etc it changes back to track display. This is very annoying. Also features 24 hour clock only, not 12H alternative. However the timer is easy to use. The remote has some confusing duplication of commands but you get used to it.
This is a beautiful-looking and thoughtfully designed little system with startling sound quality and useful features. I highly recommend it for the bedroom or office, but not for busy households, people with kids or dorm rooms. It’s no party machine, but if you’re careful with your kit, like me, it’s a winner.

my model is the SD9. i am verry happy with this product. please let me explain. first off the sound is high quality. trust me on this. now please if you have a small to medium size office this is perfect. if you have a large one you might want to get a more powerful system. i say this considering that this only has 19w per channel. please understand this is an OFFICE cd player, not a home theater cd player. and boy is this thing sweet looking. i love the look of the speakers (circular). there is also small lights that flash when you open/close this player. it combined with the glass top makes this thing sparkle with style. oh and with the glass top, i tested its durability and it is stronger than it looks and seems at first. also with the remote, this might be a personal thing but i like to have number pad on it so i dont have to hit a next button 10 times to get to the song i want to listen to. other than that the remote has good range, and because it is small you can reach all buttons easily. i have not had one person say this is wow on its looks combined with the sound. also to the gent who said this is better sounding than the bose i will have to agree. i tried the bose but i believe two speakers placed a couple feet apart sound better than a mono design trying to be stereo. bose wave radio is also a decent machine. but other than the sound of it the bose just looks plain and almost like cheap plastic(i am talking about the smaller bose wave radio by the way).

i would not hesitate to suggest this JVC system to a friend looking for a OFFICE cd player/ radio.
