Very happy with this amp.Having owned many over the years.I seem to have stuck with this one for quite a while. Powers my large speakers with no issues, I do listen to electronic music and this is perfect for my needs.

Strength:

Power, flexibility, ability to record from one source whilst listening to another. Ideal for a good hifi system - and flexible enough to deliver power with DVD's etc.

Weakness:

Not as refined in terms of pure audiophile quality :)

I'm very happy with this. When buying - I compared this side by side with a Nad (Nad 320?). The NAD won in terms of absolute sonic performance, but the Yamaha won in terms of flexability. A powerful amp - will drive practically any speaker without a problem, with bags of power to handle those difficult bass passages. Chop out the tone controls with the direct button - for instant improvements in clarity.

Strength:

Power, value for money and great basic looks!

Weakness:

Limited connections.

It offers you a great deal of power and can handle variety of music. I bought it second-hand 2 years ago and it was really a bargain (200 euros) This amplifier works great with any small speakers (my Amphion argon), altought it could still deliver more power for these speakers. Sound is not perfect, it is too hard, well too hard for classical music but good with jazzlike music and great for machine made music.

Strength:

Low price great power

Weakness:

Not stable in high and low

Well, I must inform you that I have pleased myself with a new stereoset which is more audiophile and it blows the Yamaha away. I'm talking about Marantz PM17mkll. OK you cannot compare these amplifiers, but now I really enjoy music. In short the Yamaha is not bat for just listening, but if you really want to enjoy buy Musical Fidelity or Arcam or like myself Marantz Premium.

I have the AX-470, Wich has been replaced by the 490. And I love it, Of course I lived with a Proton D540 as my main AMP for 7 or 8 yrs(of course it only worked about 50% of that time) I use Polk 4A & a Passive SUB, And it works well together.

It's hard to pass up this reciever in the $500.00 range. It gives good power to the front speakers (75 watts) but the rear speakers seems to suffer (35 watts). If you plan on upgrading to Dolby Digital you might consider buying a reciever with more power to rears. It seems to lack the fullness when you play a DVD with Dolby Digital built in.

I had one of these as a loner while waiting for an out of stock NAD 312 integrated. The Yamaha didn't even come close. Too many stupid features, not enough sound. Also, my 25 watt rated 312 integrated had more slam than the Yamaha. And it costs less. Don't but the Yamaha for stereo use.
