Review 1 of 2

Price Paid:  $5000.00 from Fona

Summary:
I bougth these speakers on wholesale a few weeks ago, and they sound great. The bass sound was not that good at first, but it became quite better after a running period of about 100 hours of playing loud music. There is not so much bass sound as I'm used to, but it is not too less either. Bass drums and low bass notes can easily be heard, but there is still something to wish for.

I have also had Kappa 600 speakers and Kappa 90 speakers, and compared to these I think Beta 40 is at the same sound quality level as these. I was not very happy about the Kappa 600, because they lacked some detail in the whole frequency area. Kappa 90 speakers sounded better, but they were very big and the bass was a little to loud and unstable. I improved a bit on that by putting some foam rubber inside the bass section of the speakers.

Beta 40 is not build so good as the forementioned speakers, but that does not seem to have any impact on the sound. I had to make a few adjustments to the speakers to make them sound properly, most importantly I had to glue a plastic part onto the cabinet, that had got lose. I also have tried to put som extra foam rubber inside the speakers, but that was no advantage.

Strengths:
Very good middle tone and high frequency reproduction, and the bass has no unacceptable flaws in reproducing low frequencies. Sound level is very dynamic.

Weaknesses:
Magnets and electronic parts are quite small compared to more expensive speakers. In my case the middletone speaker was not assembled properly.

Review 2 of 2

Price Paid:  $550.00 from ebay...

Summary:
looks like im writing the first review for these....

After reading quite a few reviews on the younger cousin of these (the primus 360s) I decided the price difference might be worth the upgrade and purchesd these instead of the 360s... Although i never got to hear the 360s, if the 360s sound half as good as these theyre worth it... any way, to the review. Imaging is great, vocals and acoustic instruments come to life, reed instruments (and brass) sound amazing. listening to Clifford Brown on these is just a treat. but more than anything, clarity is just phenomenal...

Rock sounds pretty amazing too. Stairway to heaven has never sounded so good. Live performances sound esspecaily good.

These are powered right now by an H&K pa-5800. since that amp has 5 channels, and im only using these two towers, i am using 4 channels from the amp and bi-amping the speakers... (each speaker is getting 2x80w). bi-amping defintely added alot of low end and clarity.

p.s. 1 - one of my pet peeves is overly bright treble, i was very happy to find out these dont suffer from that. so if you're like me and hate screechy treble, youre safe.
p.s. 2 - they needed some time to break-in to reveal their true nature.

Strengths:
Vocals, Jazz instruments, Acapella... Amazing clarity.

Weaknesses:
dont expect much bass. While they are rear ported (and i have them decently close to the walls) they do not generate that low end bass you might get from bigger towers or a sub.

the beta 50s im sure offer more bass although im not sure how much more...
