from Deal Mountain Summary: The picture quality is very sharp. In contrast to Sony, Toshiba goes for very sharp images instead of soft ones. This is great for faces and scenery but when you get horizontal lines such as buildings, bridges etc., there is quite a bit of artifacting (combing). It's a trade off. I like the sharp picture. (I'm using S-Video connections)
The audio? I'm simply connected up via optical cable. I don't use any of the internal decoders. It works perfectly and is as good as my receiver decodes it to be.
I've been using it for 5 months and it has worked flawlessly . It has never skipped, mis-read a disk or otherwise screwed up. Maybe I have the updated prom?
A good feature on the remote is the audio button. It allows you (depending on the movie) to select the audio track (Pro Logic, DD5.1 or DTS) when the movie is playing. This is handy because the player doesn't always pick the right track when you start up and it keeps you from having to go through all of the set up menus.
In my opinion the drawbacks are as follows: The joystick on the remote takes an annoyingly long time to react to input. When sequencing through a DVD menu, I have to wait a few seconds after the menu becomes visible before I can surf around. Also, it's 8 way directional so if you don't go exactly down you might be hitting the "down right" position and nothing happens. It can be annoying. The button on the side of the remote can be used for fast forward, fast reverse, pause and play. It's both great and a pain. I love it for usage in the dark. You know where it is and you can use it without looking at the remote. But you can also accidently activate it while simply picking up the remote. This happens a lot interrupting the viewing experience while you rewind what you just missed.
All in all I'm very happy with this and will stick with it until I get the digital TV and need a progressive player. Then I'll use it as my CD changer connected via optical to bypass what others have called average CD stereo audio performance. I've not tried the analog connection for stereo sound.
System: Mitsubishi 31" Standard Def TV Denon AV3300 DTS/DD5.1 Receiver Definitive Technologies BP2004TL, CLR2300, BP1.2X TiVo RCA DS4280 DirecTV. Monster cables.
Strengths: Great Picture. All the features I need. Ease of audio track selection. Weaknesses: Starts up the movie as soon as you power on or shut the drawer. Remote somewhat slow to react at times Similar Products Used: Sony and Pioneer DVDs
