from SUN electronics Summary: I bought this unit around 8/98 at SUN electronics when they were going out of business.
It is the first DVD player I ever had, and since I had never even seen another one work before, I was impressed with the picture right away!
6 years now and it has never given me a single problem.
Great picture and soundiund quality. Enough hook ups to choke a horse!
A little big, heavy and expensive by today's standards...but it has performed flawlessly. Since then I have bought several under-$100 DVD players for my kids rooms, and the disc drive in all of them is quite noisy, so there is yet another great feature for the Sony. Strengths: Durability and longevity. Great performance (so far!) Weaknesses: Contrary to others here, I hate this remote! Bulky, too many buttons, not very ergonomic, and the Jog-Shuttle wheel is so difficult to acurately control that I have contemplated replacing the unit for that reason alone. The unit's great performance keeps it around. Similar Products Used: N/A

from noidea Summary: Well basically, i'm not a big fan of sony as my name states, buy my dad is, he's a musician and always gets the best of the best in his audio equipment... passing on some of the old, he gave me this dvd player, and i gotta hand it to sony - its great - lots of options that i like for I/O, sound quality, very tight unit in general Strengths: everything... oh and yeah.. the blue light :D Weaknesses: it guess, the only weakness would be that its old.. but still kickn and no need for anything better, except DTS.. or prog scan..mp3 would be nice... Similar Products Used: none, sony sucks, buy yamaha, denon, pioneer, panasonic

Price Paid:
$500.00
from Mesa HiFi Sales Summary: I've had my DVP-S500D for almost 3 years now. It has played flawlessly until just recently! I brought home a copy of "The Core" DVD and popped it in my player. Life was good until the player hit Chapter 11 of the DVD! The player would freeze scenes, jump, freeze scenes again, jump, and finally, it jumped completely out of Chapter 11 into Chapter 12!!
I went back to the store where I bought the DVD, and exchanged it for another one (I dug deep into the pile to hopefully get a DVD from a different run). Brought the DVD home, popped in the player, and BAM.....same thing! Uh-oh!! These are BRAND NEW, in the cellophane DVD's. I have since played other DVD's (including Matrix) flawlessly!
Could there be a problem with my player? Or is there a new DVD format that I'm bot aware of that's making my beloved
DVP-S500D obsolete!?? Strengths: Awesome imaging, rock-solid performance (until now!), great audio, easy to use from remote or front panel. Weaknesses: Set up kind of a pain, remote not back-lit. Similar Products Used: None - 1st player I every bought.
