Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:
I am quite pleased with the performance of this unit. It works well with my five-year old Sony Trinitron TV.

I am currently using the S-video output for video (component video is not supported on my TV) and the Toslink optical output for audio. Dolby / DTS decoding is done in my receiver. I do not use any of the special features built into the DVD player (e.g., audio and video effects and adjustments), as I generally dislike the results these produce. This is not a problem with this player - I dislike any of these effects on any unit.

The colours appear to be quite realistic and I have noticed few video artifacts on my television. (The television has been colour calibrated as best as possible.) No problems have been encountered with the optical audio output.

The front panel controls are difficult to use - they look snazzy, but aren't very useful. The remote handles chapter selection awkwardly.

the player has limited audio / video switching capabilities which are useful if you need them. I have used them and they work as advertised.

The player doesn't have a progrssive scan output, but my TV can't take advantage of this feature, anyways.

I do not use this player for audio disks, as I have much better CD players elsewhere in the household. At this price level, the analog audio output is adequate for mid-fi hardware, but nothing special.

A good working DVD-Video player. Good value for the price.

Strengths:
All-round good performer at the price level. Meets my needs more than adequately.

Weaknesses:
Front-panel controls. No progressive scan if you are interested in buying this second-hand and using it with newer TVs.

Review NaN of , from Sydney

Price Paid:  $300.00 from Internet

Summary:
This is a great little DVD player. It is the first DVD player I have owned apart from my PS2. My untrained eyes and ears can definitely notice an increase in picture quality. Specifically the colour, contrast and picture sharpness.
Audio is a bit harder to tell as my PS2 ran optical digital out also and I can't really tell much difference.
General fit and finish is quite good as expected from Sony but the tray mechanism is a bit "clunky" when closing and the twist-and-push control on the front can be a bit fiddly, using the remote is much easier.
It's not the cheapest player on the market but it is a quality product that delivers the goods and it's black!

Strengths:
MP3 Playback
Excellent picture quality
Has component, composite, SVHS, coaxial audio, optical audio
Sleek, compact design

Weaknesses:
Twist-and-pull control on front of machine
Tray mechanism

Similar Products Used:
Playstation 2
