Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:
This was my first of many Sony units which I bought because I ASSUMED Sony was a good brand name with quality products. Everyone of the Sony products I own has had major problems; 32" Trinitron TV, Receiver, & this DVD player. From day one I had problems with this unit especially with disc changeovers (shuffle mode) where the changer would somehow misload discs and get stuck in some weird mode. CDR's will NOT play and I have had the unit in 2 times for repair for a tray problem that causes the unit not to turn off. Apparently, if the tray will not close properly the power will not turn off, the tray can get knocked ajar extremely easily and then its in to the repair depot to realign it...RIDICULOUS!!. I have never had so many electronic problems since I bought this Sony stuff, and will never buy Sony again!!

Weaknesses:
Poor technical support, tray is flimsy (easily knocked out of alignment), too sensitive

Review 2 of 45

Price Paid:  $750.00 from Best Buy

Summary:
I've had this unit for about 2 years now, and like every other sony product I've owned, it's a real workhorse. I've fed hundreds and hundreds of hours of DVD, CD, and CDR media through it without the slightest hint of a glitch. It plays discs flawlessly, with only the slighest quiver at layer changes, but have never encountered a disc that wouldn't play, aside from standard smudge/scratch issues.

Although this unit is a retired platform, if one comes up used, it is definately a great buy.

One of these days I'll get a progressive player with DTS, but that's a long way off -- and when that day comes, be assured it will be a sony, just like the rest of my home theater equipment that I'll be upgrading.

Fantastic unit.

Strengths:
5-Disc changer, component video out, digital audio out.

Weaknesses:
No zoom or DTS capabilities

Price Paid:  $800.00 from Bestbuy

Summary:
Every electronic device in my home is a Sony. This dvd player has played scratched cd's, cdr's, and dvd's without a hitch. Also people if you have component jacks on your tv please use them, the picture is much better than s-video. At the time I bought it was one of the top dvd players on the market and my wife had to have it even though it cost over $800.00. If we had waited only four more months we could have got it for right around $500.00. Oh well. I'm very satisfied with my purchase and somewhere down the line when this unit dies it will be replaced with another Sony brand dvd player that hopefully has progessive scanning(hint hint Sony get on the bandwagon). My player is mated with a Sony kv-36fv16 tv, slv-n70 vcr, and a 10 year old Sony slv-393 vcr(works like a champ). The whole setup is controlled by a Sony rm-av2100 remote. Everybody adds this and I don't really know if it makes a difference since I refuse to use cheap wiring on high priced electronics but everything is run off of Monster cables and wires.

Strengths:
digital dolby, digital coaxial, holds 5 cd's or dvd's and its a Sony product which are known for quality.

Weaknesses:
owned for over 1 year and have noticed no weaknesses though thx would be nice if I owned a receiver that could decode it

none

Summary:
I have this baby matched with the Sony STRDB930, SA-E815ED, KV32V42, MDSJE520 all hooked digitally as well as S-Video for the TV (and analog for recording to tapes). It's an absolute amazing set-up for my home theater and music set up. I have no complaints (after replacing my BOSE AM). It plays everything and I haven't had any problems yet. Yes, Sony has satisfied my appetite. CRISP, CLEAR, CLEAN sound and picture.

Strengths:
Dual optical pick-up. One for CD, One for DVD

Weaknesses:
Won't play DTS
