Strength:

Dolby Digital Decoder...

Weakness:

Bad Picture, Always hangs up, S-Video jumps on Sony Trinitron and Does not backup and forward scan.

It is an awful DVD player I got it at Wal-mart Online in 1998.The S-Video Output has not worked sense I brought it and it always hangs up. It will not hardly play The Matrix, Drop Dead Gorgous, and The Crow. It is bad so if you are thinking of buying one hold off and look some more.

Strength:

Dolby Digital

Weakness:

Digital playback, controls, response to commands

This is a TERRIBLE PURCHaSE ! the digital video playback craps out on ALL GOOD MOVIES...Matrix right at the 'shoot'em up scene' , enemy of the state 1/2 the way through the movie gets buggy...the rock, etc...
the samsung 905 stalls in mid chapter, i have to power on/off to get back online. It skips parts of chapters, and often repeats tracks. THIS IS A HORRIBLE DVD player. it is actually an expensive music CD player.

Strength:

great sound and price

Weakness:

skips and locks up on many movies

I got my dvd 905 on wal-mart online in 98 and right from the start it started skipping, I called samsung and they knew about the problem, why then didn't they recall this dvd or tell us what to do! I sent mine back to samsung and they fix it, something with the decoder. I was out a dvd for 6 weeks. When you buy something brand new it should work! It has worked fine since they fixed it. Anyone who has a 905 should send it in for the upgrade.

Strength:

Plenty of features, low price, great remote.

Weakness:

Doesn't play the Matrix. Doesn't play Armageddon. Doesn't play Deep Blue Sea. Doesn't play....... You get the idea. Nothing's more annoying than going out at night, renting a DVD, only to come back and realize that your lousy DVD player for whatever reason doesn't play it.

Never, ever buy one of these. Mine's for sale for $150 if anyone wants it, otherwise I think I'll just whip it on eBay and see what I can get. Nothing like having to replace expensive electronics less than 6 months after you buy them.

It plays the DVD's it feels like playing really well - it just has an aversion to good movies, apparently.

Strength:

There is nothing to recommend except do not bu one of these Dogs!

Weakness:

Almost all newer title aspecially the Matrix will cut out in mid movie. Sometimes it hangs for a sec while switching to the next scene. It's too friggin huge as well.

I spent almost over $700 on this crappy product in Dec. 1998. It was probably the worst purchase i've ever made.

Weakness:

Skipping, Stopping, Staggering, etc.

It's all fixed up. If any one has this DVD Player, get the eeprom upgrade free from Samsung. I dropped it off at an authorized dealer and two weeks later it was mine again.

I have not experienced any problems at all since the upgrade. (Like night and day)

I originally had the Samsung 905 hooked via analog lines to an old Pioneer receiver. Worked OK, though there seem to be a lot of visual glitches. (Example, the credits in "Velvet Goldmine", where the black screen with white letters suddenly becomes red with white letters...)
But I just hooked it up via digital lines to a Technics 930 receiver last night. I couldn't get Dolby Digital to work. Finally I figured out that you have to go to a setup menu and change the digital output from PCM to AC3.

But there's HORRIBLE bug. Whenever the chapter number increments as the movie is playing, there digital sound goes dead for a second. I guess it's so busy updating the front display's chapter number that it can't keep up with the digital output stream?

What a crappy product.

(Is all digital equipment going to be this buggy? Don't get me started about the non-standard firewire implementation in my Sharp camcorder...)

I have had the Samsung DVD 905 since April of 1999 and have had virtually no problems. I have it hook up to my Sony Wega T.V. via the optical cable. Also,I use it directly through my Sony digital surrond sound headphones MDR=5000'S and the performance of the Samsung 905 has been flawless. The two reviews on this product does not indicate if they have their 905 hooked up to the optical cable option. This might make the difference.

Strength:

Dolby Digital Decoder, nice universal remote

Weakness:

Completely fails to play many DVD's, can't fast play well

I purchased this product from Wal-Mart Online around November of 1998. After trying it with several titles, I returned it for another one. The new unit had the same defects.

I cannot recommend this DVD player, and based upon Samsung's telephone support, I cannot recommend any Samsung DVD players. I have no axe to grind against Samsung, but this player was a big disappointment.

With virtually any DVD title, using the fast play feature would often crash the player (I'd have to turn the player off and on again to make it respond). More often, after a fast play, pressing "Play" would make the player skip to the next chapter, which made fast play pretty useless. I really hated this, because sometimes, when watching a movie, you want to go back and watch a scene again, and it's simply impossible to do this with this player.

When I got the Matrix, the player completely stopped playing about 2/3 through the movie. When I called Samsung's tech support, I reached someone who admitted that all of the problems I reported are real, and that there "might" be a firmware update which, if available, could be installed after a six week wait. I called Wal-Mart Online and they took the player back. Now I'm looking for a new DVD player.

I recently purchased this DVD player from Best Buy and have not been happy with the video reproduction. It was recommended to me because I already had a Samsung TV and the remote would be compatable. The sound quality is great through the analog outputs to my Yamaha V-503 Reciever but in action sequences the screen jumps and flashes with digital images I would never recommend this product unless you want to buy it off of me. I give it three stars for the sound(Dolby Digital).
