Review 1 of 2

Price Paid:  $110.00 from Soundtrack (Ultimate

Summary:
Concur with everyting written by Maxfield Stanton below. This is a great player. My wife uses it almost daily. Somebody please tell me how to find another! I want another for the family room. I have tried several others (see "similar products used" below) and they are not as good.

Strengths:
Very good sound. Very good video. Most all remote functions are also on the front of the DVD player. MP3 menu is easy to navigate.

Weaknesses:
Concur with JPG / MP3 combo weakness but I don't really use or care about this. Either my disks are JPG, or MP3. VCD, SVCD, and DVD+R playback is always flawless.

Similar Products Used:
Sony DVP-NS775V (poor sound), Pioneer DVD-646A (chokes on SVCD & DVD+R), Pioneer DV-353 (also chokes on SVCD & DVD+R), various Samsung :-(

Review 2 of 2

Price Paid:  $180.00 from Centre Hi-Fi

Summary:
For the price paid, this progressive-scan player packs some kick-ass value.

Strengths:
Plays all the SVCDs that I've throw at it and this, regardless of media. Kodak, Verbatim, Ritek, CMC, Gigastorage, you name the CDRs, the DV-363 will play them. Plays MP3 files VBR encoded with LAME encoder with the highest bitrate set to 320 kbit/s. Picture is about the same as my older DV-343 in interlaced mode. In progressive scan mode, the picture is slightly sharper and clearer, about as good as my first generation progressive scan DVD player which is a Toshiba SD-5109. The sound is pretty good on this "value-class" player. It has virtual surround for people using the player with the TV speakers.

Weaknesses:
This player has the same tiny glitch as the DV-353. I guess the Pioneer firmware programmers were too lazy to fix it. If you have a 4:3 TV, playing a SVCD with the player's default settings (4:3) will result in a squished picture, you have to go to the DVD player's setup menu and change the setting as if you have a 16:9 TV. It is a very minor but strange glitch, fixed once and for all in about 10 seconds. The player cannot view JPG files and play MP3 files at the same time, I have a CDR with both MP3 files and JPG pictures, and if the PhotoViewer mode in on, only JPG files will be detected. I have to turn off the PhotoViewer in order to enable MP3 decoding.

Similar Products Used:
Toshiba SD-5109, Pioneer DV-363, Panasonic DVD-A100.

In my judgment the advantage of the MG 1.6 (and other Magneplars), stems from the following: = It is a full-range dipole, and = It has uses low-mass, planar drivers for the whole audio spectrum. These attributes account for its extraordinary clarity, coherence, “air”...
