Review 1 of 6

Price Paid:  $500.00 from good guys

Summary:
Beware!!! The unit stopped playing for no reason. The disc does not spin snymore and is therefore unuseable. I've been having having problems for a few months with opening and closing the unit to place DVD'd and CD's. Never thought it would go out on me completely. Additionally, it has the most unintuitive remote ever designed. Stay away from this at all costs. If you do, buy and extended warranty.

Strengths:
Good picture

Weaknesses:
Unreliable

Similar Products Used:
Panansonic and Marantz

Review 2 of 6

Price Paid:  $499.00

Summary:
This player has been extremely disapointing for me. It has given me problems from the first day I used it. It started out with minor freezes on almost every disc that was played. I put up with this because the picture was truly exceptional and I decided not to return it. That was a mistake because it now has demonstrated intermitent problems that include loss of sound and changing the picture to black and white. If the player is unplugged it will usually reset after a couple of tries. I have finally had it and I am looking to replace it with a better product. Buying this model was a complete mistake and I would never ever purchase any other Phillips product.

Strengths:
Picture quality(when it works)

Weaknesses:
Frequent problems with picture and sound

Similar Products Used:
Sony and Onkyo(which have never demonstrated any operating problems)

Review 3 of 6

Price Paid:  $400.00 from Good Guys

Summary:
Having given up my larger Sony ES9000 + Pioneer DV37 system (space considerations), I set out to locate a medium priced small HT setup. Settled on a harmon Kardon 125+ Polk 6600 speakers + the year old model Philips Q50. I upfraded the formware from 4.15 c to 4.15O ans was completely blown away for what followed. This little DVD player blew away almost every thing else I have seen ton date. Colors were just about perfect intensity, sharp (not overly so) picture definition, and NO artifacting! Amazing for the $$. Sound is quite good as well for HT . I have never been a Philips fan but this puppy is an exception!!!! I use the progressive scan component outs with my 2 yr old Pioneed 53" HDTV (forgot the model#)

Strengths:
Quality picture, colors. Sleek looks. Flashable eprom, Sage chip!

Weaknesses:
Non illuminated remote, funky menu system

Similar Products Used:
Sony lower end models, Pioneer elite DV37, Sony 7000

No, you can’t always get what you want. The number of loudspeakers surpassing the cost of a decent family sedan is staggering. Then there are speakers that cost as much as a house.
