Got this baby brand new on Ebay for $105, and it does a wonderful job. Movies on the progressive scan mode are flawless. Remote is a little busy, but quite easy after you play with it awhile.

hello, was looking for a dvd player for quite some time, over christmas my friend bought a jvc s-40 or something like that, i was impressed except that it couldnt play MP3''s. Then another friend bought a Curtis with MP3. I could see that it was nice feature but that the Curtis wasnt much of a player overall. Anyway I was browsing on Ubid and saw it for less than half price and went with it. Overall I''ve been very happy, plays everything absoltely perfect. Audio and video are great, all be it I''m in a dorm witha 13" television. others have said the remote is crap, i wouldnt go that far, ive seen far better and worse. My only possible qualm is that the tray feels/sounds a little cheap when it ejects, but who knows. Also has the best MP3 file system ive seen to date. although i am running it in a dorm with a less that stellar television the rest of my equipment is halfway decent. im using a pair of Aura LST-627''s that are great and the matching center. The surrounds are crap, and the sub is an 8" Jensen, crap. All through a kenwood vr-410 However, when playing audio on the dvd it does sound supperior to my other sources (md, and pioneer file cd)

Summary:
This player has been working fine after 2 months of steady use. Since I have a pretty good stereo system that doesn't have Dolby decoding, I wanted a player that had a built-in decoder. I've combined this player with a $100 AudioSource surround system from Costco and I couldn't be more satisfied. Anyone who buys a DVD player without a surround hook-up is missing half the fun. Since I don't have a digital TV yet, I can't say anything about the Progressive Scan mode but the regular picture looks greats.

I've read previous reviews of Phillips DVD players that they have a tendency to skip. After about 20 movies, I've only seen 1 skip and I think it might have been due to a scratch. There has been an slight problem with the remote, however. A couple of times the direction arrow gets stuck and repeats itself. I'm still not sure if it's a mechanical or software defect. Other than that I'm enjoying its ability to play several different formats of audio and video as well as zoom at any time. If the reliability of this player holds up, I can't see how anyone can go wrong. I'd give this player 4 1/2 stars.

Summary:
I got this as an open box special at an unheard of price for a progressive scan player. Hooked it up to my Mitsubishisi 65" HD monitor and was amazed. It's a good value even at its list price. Never bought Philips before but I'm pleasantly surprised.

Excellent Picture. Many features. Variety of sound outputs.

Slow to load dvds.

Summary:
after spending a lengthy time shopping around for the right progressive scan player, i finally found one with the philips progressive player, i had tested sony, panasonic and jvc and i didn't even consider philips because of their continuous poor reliability rates. But their new wave of players had promised to be better than the previous models made by the company and this player even got the nod from home theatre magazine and was rated better than the other players tested by sony, jvc and others. And it is true this player looks absolutly amazing in progressive scan mode no color bleed or distortion from the picture and 3:2 pulldown is a huge advantage of this player.
and unlike the previous models has no that is right no pauses for layer changes and i have had this player for more than two months and logged many hours on it.

The only disadvantages of this player is that it does not support dts sound and I have a pioneer 850s receiver that has dtses on it with 6.1 and 7.1 channel surround so i cannot take full advantage of that but dd is just fine and it remarkable plays the ac-3 format well (philips had a bad reputation with its ac-3 decoding formats). But the biggest kink of this player was the remote it sucks it is only about 2 inches tall from top to bottem and the buttons are to small i have lost the remote several times and constantly find mysely pressing more than one button at a time because of my big fingers.
overall this player has excellent video and very good audio at a killer price 235.00 and a great look; a great deal for any audion enthusiast.

Strengths:
excellent picture through progressive scan mode, and interlaced mode very good easy menues and good sound.

Weaknesses:
remote downright sucks I need a magnefying glass to see the buttons, also no dts available on this player for some reason.
