Hey all having the same problem here with my Philips 850AT, bought off eBay awhile back, new in box. Worked great except for the little issue it has presented me. I bought Shrek for the kids and it froze up the player like Windows w/GFP error (hehe). I hear everyone talking about a firmware upgrade but been unable to find on the net. I do not need to send it anywhere to be fixed just need the rom image. As I have the equipment to flash the LH28F800SGE-L70 Flash Memory chip. If anyone knows where I can just get the image it would be greatly appreciated. May even offer flashing of this chip for as low price like $19.99, you would not even need to send full unit just the processor board with the flash chip on it. During my research of this issue I discovered that the Toshiba DVD player model # 3108 has the same problem, that’s funny seeing that the processor board in the 850AT is marked PC-MAIN-3108 by Toshiba.(hehe). I hear everone talking about a firmware upgrade but been unable to find on the net. I do not need to send it anywhere to be fixed just need the rom image. As I have the equpment to flash the LH28F800SGE-L70 Flash Memory chip. If anyone knows where I can just get the image it would be greatly appreciated. www.mmicrosysm.com

Strengths:    Great when the thing is working

Weaknesses:    having to deal with customer-no-service

Bottom Line:
I also had a big problem getting this Firmware upgraded. First I was told by someone on the phone they would send me a CD and it would flash the BIOS in the DVD. Sounded strange but, hey maybe.. Well it turned out to be a bunch of c--p.
After waiting a couple weeks and no response I called to inquire what the problem was. This time I was told a different story. I was told that some chip needed to be replaced. So I sent it to the address they told me. Now after they fixed it they did not deliver it when they said they would so I had to drive 20 miles to pick it up. I feel they should have picked up the tab for the shipping both ways.

I have also had a BIG problem with this company honoring a rebate on a CDR I purchased a while back. It seems like they dare you to do business with them

Trying to get this unit upgraded? Try calling Philips Customer Relations, not Customer Support. Their corporate office should be able to help you get in touch.

Weaknesses:    Inability to play current DVDs and the company will not fix the problem

Bottom Line:
Ditto on the latest postings. My DVD 850 will not play SHREK or GLADIATOR. Called customer service and they said I could send in my player and for $125 they would send me something from their storeroom. REALLY annoying when I read that some people were able to get their machines upgraded. I complained to several people but to no avail. JUST HOW HARD IS IT TO DO A FIRMWARE UPGRADE ANYWAY! Well, needless to say I won't be buying a Philips of any kind again.

Strengths:    Does it matter???

Weaknesses:    Eats DVDs seems to be any DVD with DTS format on the disk

Bottom Line:
Same problems as many others on this site! Will not play and eats certain DVDs (at least until unplugged several times)!!!

Talked to Philips and will replace my unit for $129 which is more than I paid for my newest DVD player to replace the Philips piece of c__p.

Anyone thought about suing those bstrds!!!

Need I say I won't buy any Philips/Magnavox product again??!
