Review 2 of 3

Price Paid:  $155.00 from Future Shop

Summary:
I have a Sony KP57WV700 for DVD watching. This DVD player delivers a very good picture on my set for a lot less money that some more expensive brands. With prices being what they are today there is no need to spend wads of cash for a good DVD player any more unless you want bragging rights to impress your friends on how much you paid for yours.I would recommend it.

Strengths:
A lot of player for the money. Nice incremental zoom feature.

Weaknesses:
Audio a little flat but can be compensated with good AV hardware. No screen saver.

Similar Products Used:
Toshiba SD-1600 DVD player.

Review 3 of 3

Price Paid:  $95.00 from Amazon.com

Summary:
This is the first DVD player that I have owned, though I have viewed and heard several others at friends' residences. The DVDS35 works competently as a DVD movie player within my system, connected to a NAD C370 integrated amplifier, a pair of Vandersteen 1C speakers, an ACI Titan II LE subwoofer, and a 25" Samsung TV (via a composite connection). The DVDS35 presents the best picture I have ever seen on my relatively small analog display, but I am unable to vouch for its performance on a very large screen or its progressive scan performance. The stereo audio from DVD movies sounds cleaner and better balanced than from any HiFi VCR. As with CDs, DVD movie audio varies from movie to movie, from just serviceable to rich, "real", and 3-dimensional. As a CD player, the sound is rather thin and slightly bright. The DVDS35 sounds better than my recollection of the earliest generations of affordable CD players of the 1980s. However, it is easily bested by my Pioneer PDR-609 CD recorder, not to mention my very nice NAD C541i CD player, but I use the DVDS35 just for movies, and it costs less than $100, a fraction of the prices of the other gear. This should serve us more than adequately, until we get an HDTV (and the HDTV specs are more standardized, there are more HDTV broadcasts, HDTV prices come down a bit, etc.).

Strengths:
Good interlaced performance and movie sound. Very quiet. Nice price. Flexible zoom. More features and DVD formats than I'm likely to use.

Weaknesses:
Substandard CD performance.

Similar Products Used:
Hifi VCRs.

Marantz MA-9S2 Power AmplifierThe list above has one tenet that I continue to hold true: high powered amplifiers are necessary to reproduce the full dynamic range of music with most speakers. This became apparent when I changed from the 100 Watt per channel Bella Extreme 100 to the 250 Watt.....

The unit arrived from China well packed and everything seem to be in place. No external abuse by the carriers. The only problem was the power supply it came with. The box came with a cheap step-down converter.
