Price Paid:
$220.00
from Soundtrack Summary: I've been very unsatisfied with this product and would never recommend it. I have a friend who has a SonyS700 series and I like it considerably more. The Mitsubishi is slow to load discs or even turn on. The drive is noisy and a high pitched noise can be heard during the movie. I've also had considerable problems playing some discs on it. I plan to ditch this player ASAP and start researching something better. Strengths: It works Weaknesses: Noisy, slow, poor UI, and trouble playing some discs Similar Products Used: Sony

Price Paid:
$250.00
from Audio King Summary: I purchased this unit because of my high impressions of Mitsubishi VCRs which I compared to other VCRs a few years ago. However, this DVD (actually the 4001) is not of the same caliber.
I guess for $250 I should not expect much. The unit can not weigh more than a couple pounds....the VCRs easily weigh 2-3 times as much. So the implication is that of a poor power supply, low quality chassis and transport mechanism, etc., is what makes up this model.
On the positive side, the picture quality is quite good. I do not have HDTV so progressive scan was not needed. But on my standard 40" tube Mitsu TV, the picture quality, color tones, clarity, brightness, etc., are all very good. Not bad for $250.
The audio side is a different story. Forget about relying on the analog outputs into your HT system. Might not be an issue if you drive directly into your TV however. I tried a $100 Audio Alchemy DAC into my Counterpoint HC8x8 HT electronics, and wow, what a huge improvement. But an even greater step was to use the Counterpoint DAC10 driven by the 4001. With a high quality external analog stage and equal quality preamp/amp combination, there is hope for the sound with the 4001 afterall. I would be curious to hear another DVD player used as a transport for comparison.
The User Interface is not intuitive at all. And the far too many buttons on the remote get in the way of the 5 or 6 that are used 90% of the time. The Mitsu engineers need to take another shot at this.
So far the 5 DVDs (including Matrix) I have thrown its way have all worked fine. So this too is good.
For the price, I guess this unit is good-to-ok, but in the overall scheme of things, a 3-star rating is about as good as it gets.
Strengths: Decent Price Weaknesses: User Interface, Very Poor Sound

Review 3 of 10 Summary: I actually bought the DD-3000 model which works great and is easy to use. User friendly menus and an attractive and simple remote. It was expensive when I bought it, but has many features so I was hoping to avoid buying another DVD player soon. I have over 200 DVD and it plays them great except for three now which will not play at all do to out of date programing for the machine. Something you would not expect to happen so soon without a format change. Strengths: Easy to use. Excellent quality sound and picture. Weaknesses: Does not play "Independance Day", "American Beauty" and "Mission Impossible 2". Mitsubishi customer service is hard to contact and provides little help. A local electronics repair store says it is a programing problem and he has yet to see Mistubishi release firmware to solve the problem for any of their models.

Review 4 of 10 Summary: I found this player to be one of the worst I've seen.Colors were unreal,in a bad way.All skin tones were one color of yellow, tan. No fine details. Then the sound was undynamic, and constricted, without DEEP bottom potential. Strengths: can't find any, other than it works Weaknesses: blotchy, everyone is one shade of yellow, tan Similar Products Used: Sony,Pioneer,McIntosh

Review 5 of 10 Summary: Bought this unit after looking at Sony, Denon, Pioneer, Toshiba & Panasonic. I have always had great luck with Mitsubishi products. This one re-enforces it. I liked the Denon; however, I read in many places that the DACs on board a A/V receiver is typivally alot higher quality than the ones that come on board the DVDs. Since I have a Nakamichi AV10 and LOVE IT I decided to look for a DVD which did not have an onboard decoder. Picture is great and the sound quality is good. My CD player still sounds better than the DVD for most music CDs. The DD4000 will not play CDR or CDRW either but that is fine ad I did not purchase it for music. The fact that it does not have an on board decoder I thought they may be able to put more money in other areas of the unit. It plays troublesome DVDs without a glitch. I am not disappointed with this purchase. Strengths: Clean button format & user friendly. Weaknesses: Remote is a little weak.
