Bottom Line:
I bought Denon 556 DVD as demo, did not even blink... I have Harman Kardon DVD 22 to watch movies / TV, and this Denon is weaker on everything but sound and remote. I guess designers in Harman Kardon were sick or on bad trip when they designed remote for 22. Sound is comparable between the units.
I am using Denon as a CD player. I have it hooked in Pioneer 6500 II and pair of Tannoy C-10, along with Dual 1225 (modified). Far better sound than picture, reads everything so far, and remote is quick-easy. Oh, I use only on, off, open/close, stop and play buttons anyway...
For living room set-up with abuse possibility and Hi Fi (or as close as possible) demand, it is excellent. Delivers nice sound stage - of course, it needs decent amp and speakers.
For the price, very good buy. Even if there is some technical problems, as some other Denon models do have, for $100 or so – when dead, just give it to your local parts guy, and go buy another one. You will gain a friend and have (again) good player for a pocket change.

Bottom Line:
This thing came as part of a home theater system all in one box. I figured that since I was getting a Denon system that I didn't have anything to worry about. So much for trusting highly respected name brands. This DVD player is not for someone who likes to enjoy watching movies with no interuptions. After one week it started to freeze off and on with new movies and the sound signal started to cut off every time the player would swicth layers on DVD's, Then the sound would cut out for a half of sec every one or two minutes. I think it had something to do with the digital output becuase the CD's would cut out on me also. The picture and sound are decent if you can get past the interuptions. In my opinion denon took advantage of thier name and just threw this all in one system together without testing it because the seven surround speakers that are included are not even worth hooking up, the only thing decent in the dht-486 is the receiver and the subwoofer.
