Strengths: Playback of PAL media on our NTSC system.
Light weight
compact size
Composite, S-video and Component Video outputs
Stereo analog and Coaxial Digital Audio outputs
Weaknesses: Remote control.
The remote is small and awkward to use. The buttons do not have a positive feel and often pressing them has no effect on the player.
Coby products are not known for long term reliability.
Bottom Line: DVD/CD/MP3 player with PAL to NTSC conversion.
This player is compact and light weight. The controls on the player itself are very basic. i.e. Power, Play/Pause, Stop and Open/Close. This means that the remote control is a key element in accessing all the features and functions of the unit.
The remote control is very compact, measuring about 2" X 4.5" X 0.5". The forty buttons on the control are all the same size. There is no back lighting and limited color clues to guide the user. The "buttons" are the membrane type, which makes for poor tactile feedback. The control seems very sensitive to the angle that one uses to communicate with the main unit. Sometimes multiple button presses are required to get the unit to respond to the remote.
The picture quality, when used with our direct view CRT television, was crisp and clear. The sound was transparent and dynamic when we used the analog stereo outputs.
The most significant feature for us was the ability to play PAL format discs on our NTSC television with excellent results. Our Chinese DVDs were all played back with the quality limited only by the quality of the pressing.
