Strength:

Audio quality DVD video quality (when the DVD is working) Simple and easy to use user interface

Weakness:

DVD player broke after only one year. Based upon what I've seen, it costs as much to get it fixed as a new unit.

This combo CD/DVD player was a great find since I was having to deal with two pieces of equipment up to the point that I purchased the DV-C503 unit. The audio quality is acceptable and the DVD quality a nice surprise. However, after approximately 1 year, it now fails to play DVDs. It begins OK but as the movie plays on, it gets "stuck" with the frame frozen and it is only recoverable by powering off the entire unit and starting the movie again. Given that another freeze is likely at this point, I've regrettably gone back to VCRs for the timebeing. Very disappointing.

Strength:

Weel, it worked for awhile.

Weakness:

Doesn't work properly now.

Thing crapped out - won't play perfectly good CDs. Rejects them and opens the tray, but not always. Except that it occasionally plays the exact same CD I'd say it was physically broken. Since it does I suspect the software is faulty, but Pioneer won't respond to my inquiries about whether there's a way to reset the software. Bad customer relations, IMO, and I hope bad PR results from this review. At least so far it still palys DVDs.

Strength:

Versatile - plays both CDs and DVDs in one tray. No need for two components (a selling feature for the spouse-approval-factor)

Weakness:

Laser pickup packed it in after about 18 months.

Bought this unit, brought it home and all was well for about 6months at which point some CDs stopped playing. Eventually no CDs would play, which was a real pain considered I bought the unit to do dual duty with both DVDs and CDs. Basically, I went without music for awhile. That is until recently when DVDs stopped playing as well. Had a repair shop look at it since it was past warranty and it would have cost over $200 to fix. Figured I'd cut my losses and buy a new DVD player. I'm sworn off Pioneer stuff for awhile. Hoping to get more life out of my Toshiba SD4800 I bought - and it plays DVD Audio.

Strength:

Picture and sound

Weakness:

Won't stay open when I push the button

Overall this dvd player is great.Good picture and sound. I've had this for 2 years now and the only problem is that 8 months ago when I push the open button the tray opens then closes again. It takes 3-6 times of pushing the open button to get it to stay open.

Strength:

5 Discs, supports VCD, CRRs etc... Intuitive setup, good remote.

Weakness:

Quality... laser broke after 6 months, warranty fixed it... but it was in the shop for 3 months!!

A good DVD player with the advantage of having the carousel(?) . I'm a bit dubious about the quality though. I bought 2 - one for me and one for my dad.

Strength:

Nice picture and sound

Weakness:

Durability. The laser broke after 15 months. No warranty and a $190 cost to fix with very little response from customer service.

The player worked well when it worked.

Weakness:

Performance

I really liked the fact that this player has ultra fast cd/dvd select time, disc load time and track select time. I'm blown away by the speed it has. Unfortunatley while it plays dvd's perfectly it has yet to perform at all while playing cd's. When I play a cd there is a wierd static noise that is output from the dvd player. I've switched connections but i still get the problem. This is a major negative on the product. It could be a faulty machine and pioneer's warranty will hopefully save me but my score adjusted accordingly.

Strength:

Good quality, multi-disc carosel, unbeatable value.

Weakness:

CD playing is satisfactory but could be improved.

After owning a Pioneer shelf stereo system with 6-disc cartridge changer that never (never) skipped while playing CD's for nearly 10 years, I was pleased to find this DVD player at Costco. I have pleased with this unit. The picture and sound quality are excellent. I must say, however, that the CD playing capability of this device is not as good as the older CD player of the shelf system. I have experienced a couple of skips while playing non-scratched CD's. This happens very infrequently (really only about 2 times in the last year), but this dissappointing based on my past experience with Pioneer. Also, when I first got the DVD player, when starting the movie Gladiator, there was no sound and I had to eject and restart the disc. This may have been attributed to a faulty DVD (rental) or maybe loose wiring. It hasn't happened since. Overall I am very satisfied and the quality / price ratio for this Pionieer unit simply CANNOT BE BEAT. You will not find a multi-disc player of good quality for a better price. Top value. I use this DVD player with the Pioneer VSX-D509S receiver and 36" Zenith television.

Strength:

clean, warm sounding and vivid, sharp picture. Great price for the quality.

Weakness:

NONE!

The most elegant looking DVD player ever made with solid costruction and beautiful sound. I bought two of them at Costco with a $20 rebate each. I did not like the remote to start with but after a month a month I got used to it and I love it very much now. I have one in my listening room connecting to my other components like Denon 3300 receiver, Adcom 555 power amps, and Vandersteen 2Ce/PSB Image 1B speakers. Occasonally I hook it up to my Golden Tube GTA-SE40 amp and enjoy the blue glow that comes with the beautiful sound of the 503. Video is excellent in every way with no complaints at all. I love the unit. I have another unit placed in my master bedroom and I love the fact that the remote control is exactly the same as the one downstairs. I love my 503 and it also can take a lot of abuse too. Just play it (them) and enjoy the music and pictures.
