Strength:

Good Player for the price, $199 at Best Buy. It supposed to be upgradable. Find me a site to do it?

Weakness:

Quarky player if there was ever one. The quality is good but the interface has its short comings.

In all the player has lived up to its name as a good player for the money. I just wish it was easier to use. I am forever trying to just play a DVD and yet the player wants to bring up stange menus. I just wan tto veiw the DVD. It is supposed to be upgradable. I'm lookinmg for a site to get this done. Hopefully a new interface. If I can get that I will rate thi much higher.

Strength:

Price. Plays most cd formats. Does what it's supposed to.

Weakness:

Poorly designed remote functions which have been reprogrammed acceptably into a universal remote.

Finally, ran the infamous Matrix DVD so it's time for a review:

There must be a QC variance on this unit because Matrix ran flawlessly-NO freezeups, audio dropouts or video whiteouts.

Have watched over 30 DVD's and there has only been very infrequent and minor (milisecond) video freezeups. To my eyes, the video has been fine without the terrible geometric
pattern "crawl" evident in some Toshiba models and the reported lipsync problem with some SONY's. To me, those are
major problems not found in my experience.

Having frequently played audio CD's, the sound is superb and
again, there have been no audio freezeups.

There is a grinding noise while the CD/DVD is cueing up, however, this disappears as the play mode activates.

The conclusion on this specific unit is highly satisfactory.

If you get a "good" one, enjoy, price/performance has been excellent.

Strength:

Reasonable price, very good performance, plays most cd formats, multi system (NTSC/PAL)

Weakness:

Ugly design, remote controller could be better

I've used this player for more than six month without any problem. Slightly hot, but no problem with good ventilation.
Excellent good pictures and sound reproduction.

Strength:

easy to use

Weakness:

remote and output

Easy to play with & hook up...played MATRIX good, but tried some dual layer dvds; the type that jump to the movie & skip the menu and wouldn't bring up the menu (turns off power.) [Bram Stroker's Dracula 1992] Has large headphone jack if your TV doesn't - marketing & engineers, go figure. Good model for a beginning home theater. Owner's manual okay but not too good at explaining what options and capabilities do or the player's limits. Audiophiles stay away.

Strength:

Easy to set up. Excellent sound quality on DVD's AND audio CD's. Plays any format.

Weakness:

Remote.

I just bought this a few days ago and let me just say I am completly satisfied. I researched several models (RCA, Panasonic, and Toshiba) and this one had the goods on every one of them, at least it looked that way on paper. Having bought it and used it, it also proved it operationally.
It played the Matrix flawlessly, as well as CD-R's. Not a single glitch in anything I've played.
The remote is a little weak, but if that is the only complaint, then I'd say so what!
At around $200, you can't beat this player.

Strength:

Good Price.. Great Quality.. Good Player

Weakness:

Control, it kinda sucks.. but thats about it

This player is very good for the money you pay for. I had 3 glitches in the Matrix. 3 skips to be exact but it was rented and it looks pretty scratched up i hope to buy the movie and see if it scratches.. Great Buy i'd recommend for a first time buyer.

Strength:

Price/Performance ratio

Weakness:

Noisy finding track (Sounds as though it's eating your disc) however they come out unscathed. Remote small. I use a One for all- HP 8 anyway.

I'm upgrading to one with component V-outs, or I would be more than happy with this unit. The build quality isn't up to snuff compared to my Theta CD transport. For 169.00, what can anyone expect?
Greatest buy for a beginner DVD/CD player.

Weakness:

Extremely poor quality

The first one I bought, the video went out in less than a week. I exchanged it for a new one and the audio went out in it after 15 minutes. In both machines, the video was blurred and skipped in places.

I exchanged the last one for a Toshiba and it is excellant.

Strength:

Plays all formats of CD technology. Easy OSP.

Weakness:

Remote could be easier to use. Also, is it me or, does the drawer not seem to be crisp in the opening thereof

I paid around $200 for this DVD player and I've found that you CANNOT get a better player. All possible audio/video inputs/outputs are included. Very easy to use and enjoy.

Strength:

Price to Performance Ratio, Good Sound and Picture Quality

I have had this DVD player for about a month and a half and I am very pleased. I got it for $199 through Columbia House DVD club and had to wait a couple of months since it was on back order but it was worth it. The picture and sound quality are fantastic and I have had no trouble with disc skipping at all. My system is as follows:

Sony STR-GX800ES Receiver
Sony KV-32V15 Monitor
Sony CDP-79ES 5 Disc Changer
Paradigm 3SE MKIII Front Speakers
Paradigm CC-100 Center Channel
Paradigm ADP-150 Bipolar Surrounds
Sony MDP-455 Laserdisc Player

This component has been a welcome addition to the system and are now enjoying renting movies again since laserdiscs are no longer readily available.
