Bloody good , the best cd recorder I ever had , now it's finished , they all get the same stupid failure: trays open and close , no recording , messages for checking this and that , i am electronics repairman and tryed to find what's wrong , and it's software problem , and what's more Pioneer don't help to solve it ! I guess it is more than a software problem it's inbuild selfdestruction after 10 years !
mine is practically like new burned more or less 100 cd's and that's it , laser is still in good nick all is like new , but nobody seems able to repair it and without Pioneers help forget it , no manuals , no backup , nothing .
I have the same trouble with another Pioneer product :a bloody expensive DVJ x1 that's a dvd VeeJay machine that costs 3000 £ or 4000 Eu .. silly doesnot even have a headphones outlet !! I sent message to Pioneer Japan , no reply !! I ask for software to play multiregion , IT IS A PROFFESIONAL unit you know ,and it's supposed to play EVERYTHING .. no reply ... forget Pioneer buy something else !

Strength:

Solid built quality, reads poor quality media.

Weakness:

No Digital Record Level, not compatible (Rec.) with Professional media.

I bought this recorder back in 1998 when it first came out (a hefty price tag). My purpose was to transfer vinyl to CD for re-mastering. What prompted me to purchase this was the "Recording" level control for fading out after recording. After a while, I've realize how good of quality this machine really was and started to appreciate it more and more. This machine works very well in conjunction with a professional unit (Marantz CDR631) that I mainly use for mastering and archive. Its got no problem reading poor quality discs either, where I can immediately transfer it to higher grade discs with my pro unit.

Strength:

Fader feature makes the recordings sound better then doing ir manual. You can adjust Right and Left channels independently.

Weakness:

Can only use Consumer Disc. Have trouble copying disc on a Macintosh computer. Records content warmer then the Classic CDR-200.

This model was the first CD Burner I've owned, but took it back because the discs were $8.00 each, and got a computer burner with lower cost discs. This was in 1999. Just about a month ago I got this model back. It got a real nice fader feature on it, and seems easy to use. Remote layout is user-friendly. The recordings it makes are real great but louder then the Classic CDR-200. This machine is a champ! Computer discs sounds bad???

Strength:

Easy to operate, good quality of recordings.

Weakness:

Breakdowns.

I own the unit since Okt. 1999. In the first year it's been back 3 times for repairs, because it froze in the middle of a recording. I'm not using it a lot now, as I now own also a double deck Philips 775. When I do use it it's fine, and the quality op the recordings are perfect.

Strength:

Perfect recordings

Weakness:

so far none found, maybe a bit slow in use, opening , closing , switching on , searching disc , if you can call this a weakness

The best cd recorder I have ever used, even perfect on cheap'' White'' products, which I can not say from the Philips cd recorders..Never one problem , and cd''s play perfect in car changers or indash players!

Strength:

Easy to use, excellent sound reproduction, sturdy construction, compact size, reasonable price.

Weakness:

will only record on music cdr's and cdrw's.

Since my previous review of this unit I have used it to burn a lot of cd's. I now have to increase my original rating of this unit. It creates flawless copies and is very simple to operate. I have had no problems playing the cdr's recorded on this unit in any other cd player and the sound is excellent. I can't think of anything else a home cd recorder could do that this one doesn't. It's a great unit and a great value especially since the blank music cd's have come so far down in price. It's also nice that there's 80 minute blank music cd's available now.

Strength:

Ability to make CDR and CDRW recordings from up to 3 disks in one program. Machine defaults to 2x speed for digital recordings. User can select 1x speed as an option. Allows for synchronized analog recordings. Programs record at 2x speed and the machine goes into record pause while the disks change and then restarts when the digital signal is started. Also, has a digital record level. Allows more than 1 song, but less than all songs to be erased from a CDRW. The songs, however, have to be in sequence, i.e., 3, 4, 5, etc to the last song or 7, 8, etc. to the last song.

Weakness:

My first machine broke after limited use. The draw which can hold up to 3 CDs to be recorded/played refused to open. Luckily I did not have any CDs in the draw at the time. Don't know if this was the result of a design flaw, poor workmanship, or bad luck. Does not have the ability to add CD text to recorded CDs - don't really care about this item too much which I think is an overrated bell/whistle anyway.

This is a review for the new Pioneer PDR-W739 which was not on the choice list when I sat down to write this review. The machine is very similar to the functions of the PDR-555RW except it is a duel well machine. It is real easy to use with logical steps to set up a recording. Has all 3 types of inputs AND outputs (optical digital, coaxial digital and analog). My scores of 3 are only based on the fact my first machine broke. The recording and play functions are what I wanted and what was excluded (CD Text entry) I didn't want.

Strength:

Easy to set up and use

Weakness:

Data stream intermittently drops out using optical links in Digital Sychro mode...interrupting recordings and ruining CDR's

I only have used this machine for a week but the sound quality is first class.Recordings from CD are almost the same as the originals. However, more than 50% of CDR's have been ruined when using Digital Synchro, due to data stream drop out, which switches the recorder back into Rec/Pause half way through a track. Does anyone know why it does this?

Strength:

Ease of use, especially when recording from multiple cd's

Weakness:

build quality - The unit front draw did not work properly and broke within one week of use, store reported that was common in this unit. Also had some functionality (e.g. skip track) not working (DOA).

The product reviewed was the Pioneer PDR-739, but I could not figure out how to enter a review for that product.

I was pleased with the sound quality and ease of use. Recorded CD's were fine. The programming of this unit was straightforward, but as mentioned above I had to return unit due to qulity problems. The store manager reported that I was among several with such problems. I would wait to buy this unit until these problems are resolved with manufacturer. A minor nit is that CD-R Audio disks are not easy to get, but at least Costco carried them at reasonable price of 10 for $20.

2 stars are due to quality. I used this product independent of any system and with Sennheiser 580 headphones.
