This is an update on my previous review. I just got the Yamaha fixed for 20 bucks and it works perfectly. So, ignore the negatives in my previous post.

Strength:

Sound quality, ergonomics.

Weakness:

Reliability, not quite four years on this unit which has not been overused and has been well maintained.

I have had great pleasure listening to this product. It has brought new life to my old discs. I remember when I first plugged it in and went through all my cds as if I was hearing them for the first time. Now the bad new, the unit it fried. It will not play without making a horrible noise and skipping around. I am not pleased overall due to this problem.

Strength:

great sound, great price

Weakness:

getting harder to find

Purchased after reading reviews on this site. Cant go wrong when 17 people say its an awesome player. Very lovely player. I upgraded from a NAD 522 "budget audiophile" cd player. The Yamaha is 2 or 3 notches above the NAD on a scale of 1-10. BUY IT NOW OR DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strength:

Solid bass (much better than the sony I had before), Excellent transport mechanism, Digital output, Disc Naming

Weakness:

None-

This is a great player, so don't hesitate to buy. I got an open box buy for $199, but for this changer, anything under $300 isn't unreasonable. Happy Listening!

This is one heck of a unit. I've been using this CD player for over 1 year and it is still going strong! I've heard other players (sorry, I don't have particular models or brands in mind at this moment) and this player still sounds better than others for the price. I've had friends tell me that it sounded great (not good) and they wanted to buy it off of me! Well, I may sell but for now, I'm satisfied. This one is in my room while the newer 775 is in my living room. Both sound great, but the 775 have CD text capability, better readout (dot matrix), and flatter buttons. I really can't say which one sounds better since the 775 is hooked up to a Yamaha DSP-A3090 (the 765 is hooked up to the RXV-995) so it might be an unfair comparison. But so for, they both sound great for the price. One thing though, the 765 will skip on slightly scratched discs while the 775 will play through with some "clicking" noise from the scrathes. Overall, buy either one if you have the time and money to give them a listen to. Happy listening!

Strength:

Clear, Noiseless, Pure Sound

Weakness:

Midrange a bit weak

System: Yamaha 795a a/v receiver + Energy XL-26 speakers
I thoroughly enjoy this CD player. It was a little tricky getting used to the carousel (my first one), but after a while it got easy. The PlayExchange is great! Overall the unit seems solid.

MSRP: $350
I paid: $320+tax
Good quality for the price. I couldn't get the sleazy salesman to come down any more. I've seen better internet prices, but I prefer to buy local for electronic stuff.

As I prepared to write this I was thinking that the midrange suffered a bit (possibly my speakers), and then I read Ross' review and figured it may really be true. In any case, it still sounds good. Music like Everclear, 311, Sheryl Crow sound freaking great! "No Doubt" comes out a bit hollow. The detail of all the music is fantastic.

For this price range I think it would be difficult, if not impossble, to do better. The next step up seems to cost an additional $200-300. And since I'm not an audiophile (i.e. somebody that makes a LOT of money), this thing gets the job done.
Compared to its competition, I'll give it 5 Stars Overall.

Strength:

Warm sound

Weakness:

Memory limited to 100 cd's
Not calibrated to read all cd-r's

This player works and sounds great on commercial cd's. However, I find it has problems playing back some kinds of cd-r's... specifically those burned on a Yamaha CD-RW drive! Ironic that Yamaha did not coordinate the tolerances of their cd-players against the recording specs of their burners, maybe the computer division does not talk to the home audio division.

I am also finding the memory limit of 100 discs too confining. If I had things my way you should be able to enter at least a thousand cd's into memory, it's so cheap these days. Because of this factor I am now considering buying a Sony 400 disc mega-changer. It can store programming information for all 400 discs, perhaps because it only stores which songs you don't want to hear. Yamaha decided to store the tracks you want to hear and since most of us fill it with cd's that we like it probably uses more memory than the Sony method.

Strength:

Pro-bit processor *really* works, the music on standard CDs sounds fuller and more dymnamic.

Weakness:

No HDCD, door is not as quiet as some players, but it's not really a problem

I've bought this CD-player at a clearance price (it has been replaced by the Yamaha CDC-775), and it was WELL worth it!! I find this player sounds a lot better than the comparable Denon I listened too - which was somewhat murky. The more expensive HK 8500 sounded better with HDCD discs and almost as good on normal CDs, but it was more expensive and didn't offer the features or reliability that the Yamaha does.

This is a terrific 5 disc CD player, if you need the ability to play multiple CD this player is really worth an audition. I think there is no better in this class. You can't get better sound, even in a single disc transport, at this price.

I just purchased the Yamaha cdc-765, and I'm very happy with it. I listened to it in the store (duplicate CDs playing simultaneously, switching the amp input), up against the denon 460. Although the denon was audibly better than the yamaha 665, up against the 765 I could only hear very minor differences (denon sounded slightly fuller in the mid-ranges). But the Yamaha has better features (continuous play for single or multi; random play for single or multi and repeat play for a single disc or a single _track_!!), and the tray allows you access to all 5 discs at once. The Yamaha can even store track programs for 100 discs!
Downsides I've discovered so far- no power off on the remote, and several features (like play mode) on the remote but not on the device (though most features are avail on both). If I hate it after a while with my marantz amp and tannoy speakers, I'll be sure to send an update.

This CD Changer from Yamaha is well and truely a winner in my mind!

As i have said befor in other reviews (SONY STRDE-715, and YAMAHA RXV-992), i think that yamaha has the right stuff!!

I have had my unit for about 8 months!

Once again Yamaha has decided two go is own way by developing it own IC's and DAC's the PRO BIT Technolgy in this unit is unbelevable.
The only down side to this wonderful unit is in some styles of music, like techno it has a tiny hashness and slightly to much sharpness, but in all other music that i listen to like every thing fron The three tenors and icehouse to n-trance and sasa, overall i think that it is a pisser little unit!

over all i give it a 4.5 out of 5!
