After recently shopping for cd players in the $400-$600 range, I decided on the Sony. Sonically, it is similar to Denon, NAD, Onkyo, and CAL Audio (lowest priced models) in terms of bass tightness and cleanliness of mids and highs. In terms of features, it is also very similar. Where it surpasses the competition is in construction quality and ability to handle defective discs. Construction quality is first-rate, using all metal externally and thick I-beam bracing in the transport internally. In terms of playing defective discs, the Sony would play discs that no other player would even touch. Finally, Sony is now offering a five-year wayyanty on ES proudcts (this warranty replaces the three-year warranty that may be included with the unit). The combination of sound and build quality makes this player very competitive in this price range.
