I bought this unit for about £40 including delivery second hand from Ebay which is about $83 US. Before this unit I owned a 111 disk Technics unit. I must say this unit is MUCH better. OK first off it was mentioned in the Ebay listing that the door did not open proper. So I opened it up and it was just a case of a band coming off the motor. Replaced the band and now it woks great! Have owned it for more than a year and it that time have had NO problems! I have it full of about 100 disks and none have ever fell out, jammed skipped or anything like that. Sound quality is superb, I have this linked up to my Technics seperates amp. CD text works perfect even when CD is playing, it plays CD-R's well and if you add the text to your CD-R it shows up. It has many features for programming etc. Can't knock it at all. very, very pleased with it. Infact I joined this website just to rate this because I saw all the negative comments and wanted to tell you how good this unit is! Read pro's & cons below-

Strengths: Holds 300 disks, plays CD-R's, CD text, Programming features and lovely sound.

Weaknesses: Time taken when changing disks is a little much, but bearing in mind the amount of disks in it it's fine. Just me being impatient, but the worse thing is probably the noise when changing disks.

Strength:

-holds 200 cd's -Ability to remember to skip tracks you don't like

Weakness:

dosen't play cd's very well poor sound

Got this mega changer to replace my personal cd player for my home audio system. When I saw that you program in to "skip/delete" a track you don't I thought it was the way to go. I don't have a problem of it loading cd's, but it dose not like playing them very well. Would bother me but my cheap sony boom box can play the cd's just fine along with my alpine cd player in the car. When it dose play the cd's I do not feel the sound quality is there when my cheap kmart hi-fi vhs player makes better sound on my home audio system. If it would play cd's and being it has custom track memeroy I would have gave it a 4

Strength:

Ability to hold 200 cd's, an and text.

Weakness:

MY wife says it skipped like it was jumping rope.

This was an open box item which had the remote control and owner's manual. Purchased 6/14/01, in the shop by 6/20/01 rpair slip states one or more mechanical alignments made. Running scared I never put more than 5 cd's in my 200 cd changer. Summer 2003 back in the shop, will not play an entire cd. Diagnosis cracked laser. Price tag to fix cd player $200.00!

Strength:

Sony has a great rep with usually great products.

Weakness:

Turned out this modle is a bad egg. Sounds like this particular machine has real problem. Sony's abilty to act professionaly.

I bought this a Chrismas present to myself and have nothing but other than good things to say. In less than six months the selection arm mis-fed and damage 3 or 4 of my cds. I buffed them out and thought it was a fluke. I went through the remaining cds and made sure they were in properly. I move to california hook up my stereo and fell asleep listening on the shuffle mode. I woke up to 30 of my favorite cds damaged beyond repain and a good majority of the rest with suface scratches. I sent out the machine to fix with a letter and one of my cds to show the damage. I got the machine back a couple of weeks later with a repair note and that was it. I called up sony "customer service" and got a moron who denied every thing and then made counter acusations. I was on hold for about an hour...before I just left the phone off the hook on their bill. Wouldn't buy it again.

CD Text (shows your 'own' house made CD-R's with CD Text , if you included this ofcourse), SHUFFLE ALL DISCS, it's nice to hear ceedees you were forgotten :)

Weakness:

Depth of the unit, and the mechanical problems i experienced (they are fixed now I hope). I'am convinced that this was a design error!! And now they have a "bug fix" for it

Ok, i'm back again, i posted a review 8 months ago, in that review i described the jamming of discs, but now.......after a long period of repaires (at different locations, finally at Sony) it works perfectly. They replaced the "pick and place" mechanism and as bonus a new laser ?!? I connected it via fiber and now I'am happy!!! Look at the strengths and weaknesses:

Strength:

Holds a lot of CDs. But so does a nice rack.

Weakness:

Busts CDs Sounds terrible

Price: £200 I think the other reviews here have sufficiently covered the mechanical problems this player has. I have experienced them, and lost several CDs to horrible scratching, as well as nearly losing my fingers poking around inside trying to save CDs that had fallen out. I have given the player to my brother now, with strict instructions to only load one CD at a time, which kinda takes the point out of a CD changer. The other thing I would like to talk about is the sound quality of this unit. Put bluntly, this is a very bad sounding CD player. The treble and midrange are very muddy and indistinct. Very little detail comes through. The bass is a little thin. All spatial feel is lost. Dynamic range is terrible, so sound is robbed of impact. The overall sound is very dull, and your brain will instantly tune it out. I actually had better results hooking my girlfriends cheap and cheerful discman up to my amp with a cheap and nasty cable. About six months after I bought it, I realized that my Sony tuner was producing sound a lot better. Clearly something is wrong when a CD player is outperformed by a tuner. I took the plunge and spent another £250 on an Arcam Alpha 7SE. The change was *amazing*. There were parts of songs that I could swear I hadn''t heard before. Returning briefly to the changer, these passages, now that I noticed them, were dull and indistinct. Given that I am generally less than 5m from my CDP when I am listening to it, it is actually about the same amount of work to get up and swap CDs as it is to thumb through 150 CDs on an LED display, so I don''t even miss the changer aspect of it. In short, for the same money you can get a great sounding CD player (Sony single disc players are nice I hear :). I was very uninformed when I bought mine, but you aren''t. Don''t buy it.

Weakness:

Noise , NO TEXT CD !!!

Whatever you say, at this price the 200 Cd's in 1 box is cool.
the display is 'a getting used to' one, but readable, but why no text display at play time ??? bad move sony!
TEXT CD's arn't read at all.... althrough it is sold as a textCD compatible system ( my CD's a read at the car stereo, but on in this system )
This sounds like a OS update is nedded thingy!

Oh, it stays in my rack, i love the warm sound sony CD players produce.

Weakness:

The entire player

Had that player for less than a week before it start jamming and ripping some CD. Return it for a second unit who did the same. Changed it for the Pioneer PDF1039.
Did cost a bit more, but a hell of a difference. Display a lot more easier to read, data easy to enter and with more info. The Sony was also a lot more noisier and slow. The sound was also a lot less detailed and metallic. Bad
