Strength:

Plays CD-R and CD-RW's has a digital out looks nice

Weakness:

Does NOT PLAY DTS!!!!! on the digital out it only has PCM stereo out

This cd player is good sounding, But if you have some DTS audio cds don't be misled by the digital out because it only will send PCM to you preamp. This cd player looks very nice cosmetically and sounds good and plays CD-R and CD-RW's. It would be a great CD player if it played DTS cds but it doesn't. It also has volume control on the remote which is a plus too. Over all it's an OK low priced CD player. If you don't have DTS you can't go wrong with this Player it does everything else you would want in a cd player. I liked the way it sounded compared to my old Sony CD player, hooked through the COAX Digital out.

Strength:

good sound quality

Weakness:

none

It's just a simple CD player that supports CD-RW's.
It's good at what it is supposed to do, so i'll give it 5/5. I have no complaints.

By the way, i love the remote some people didn't like here in other reviews.

If you are seeking for a simple player with no extra's, this is something for you.
It is ready for use with a CD recorder, but i have no use for these features.

Strength:

Sound, Reliability

Weakness:

Remote control

I got the product online. It is a best value: it is very good for the low price. I choose this product because it uses the same technology the the model 721 that is sold in Europe and was selected as product of the year by the Frech magazine diapason. However, if you like a product compatible with DTS or HCDC then you need to look for another item.

Strength:

Versatility, plays CDR's & CD-RW's

Weakness:

Soundstage A Bit Thin

After researching and buying a Home Theater featuring a Yamaha RX V995 AV Receiver and Tosiba 3109 DVD player, with Energy speakers, I realized that while the Toshiba sounded spectacular on Music CD's, it wouldn't play CD-R's I burned for my car. It would only play burned CD-RW's. After 5 months of making BOTH CD-R AND CD-RW's of everything I burned, I decided a 2nd dedicated CD player was in order.

My priorities were to find a good value as I'd blown the budget on HT, and a player that would handle CD's, CD-R's and CD-RW's with equal aplomb. After a bit of research I settled on Philips 775 and got a truly AMAZING deal @ Mercata.com...shipped price of ~$70.00 after applying the $50 buck credit you get for signing up with Mercata.

The evaluation:
1. You get what you pay for - depth of soundstage, detail and musical transparency on the Philips are in no way comparable to the Toshiba. It is quite listenable, no specifically intolerable qualitties, just less warmth and overall musicality.

2. However, build quality is surprisingly acceptable for this price...lightweight but the controls, transport drawer etc... all function in a stable and reliable manner without extraneous noise or mechanical heebie jeebies. I even find the unit's faceplate handsome and it blends well with my pricier equipment.

3. My summary is that as a versatile and inexpensive 5 CD carousel changer to play CD's, CD-R's, CD-RW's for anything but the most serious listening, its a great value. When I'm in the mood to hear every breath of Glenn Gould's whispered humming or the full punch of Steely Dan's Gaucho, I'll load 'em into the Toshiba, even nmake a CD-RW copy if source is CDR. For everyday listening, background as my wife and I read the paper or go about our daily activities, or to let the kids annoy us with that new Aguilera CD they just brought home (OK, its not 1/2 bad), the Philips CDC775 fulfils exactly the purpose for which I purchased it and I'm quite pleased and satisfied.

3 1/2 Stars overall
