Strength:

Tonality is right.

Weakness:

The tinted glass top piece is beautiful, but delicate.
Basic remote lacks features, but I kind of like it simple.

Strange that the 508.20 and 508.24 have been reviewed, but not the predecessor. Anyhow, the original 508 is an excellent cd player that is very detailed and also very relaxing. It seems to strike the right tonal balance. It is probably not as lively as its 20 or 24 bit successors, nor as dynamic. It is on the polite side, but has the resolution and transparency that keep it from sounding dull. From top to bottom, tonally speaking, the 508 has enough richness and smoothness coupled with equally enough detail. It is just so dead on neutral that I can't find any flaws. I can't complain at all. It is one of those very few products I will never sell, like the Sennheiser HD 600. It was the reference at its time, but is now hard to come by.
