Strength:

Quality of sound, plays even scratched CD's that won't play in my car.

Weakness:

Remote isn't that great. Sometimes the platter seems to get lost & backs up when moving the discs around.

Excellent sound. It has that detailed, realistic sound Harmon-Kardon is noted for. Better than anything else I have heard. Open and highly captivating. MUCH better sound than Sony, Pioneer, JVC, etc....ANY of the mainstream discount store brands.

Strength:

sound quality, 4-disc exchange, optical output, solid construction

A great buy. As a student, I read up quite a bit before making the purchase. One review that really sold me stated that this 5-disc changer output sound quality that rivaled top-end single players. Even 7 years later I still love the sound and find that reviewer to be correct. This player matched with a mid-level JVC amp and Infinity SM-8s brings incredible clarity to even Nirvana's Nevermind and is spectacular with Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique. I recommend the FL 8400 to anyone looking for audiophile sound with some common consumer bells and whistles.

A great CD player. Very good sound reproduction. For what i paid its an unreal bargin. For $75USD you would get some 2 pound made in tiawan piece of junk. I got an H&K!

Have had this CD Changer for 7 years now and am extremely happy with it. Have had no problems with it at all. Just purchased a new receiver (Harman Kardon AVR 220) so I was finally able to hook up the optical out. I agree with the other posts about the remote surprisingly sucks. That’s the only problem I see with this CD Changer, The sound quality is much better then other CD players I’ve hooked up.

Strength:

good sound, design, display, heavy, play cdr, cdrw, all cd audio.

Weakness:

bad remote control button and infra-red receiving angle, on-off button ...

My cd player model is FL 8450. Very rigid product. I very satisfied with it. The sound is great. Never have any problem after 5 yrs continue using. The opt output and analog output give the same good quality when I connected to my 2092 yamaha receiver. Also it can play a scratch cd which my car cd player cannot play.

Strength:

This unit has never had any problems in 5 years of use. Looks nice, too.

Weakness:

Goes into play/search mode upon power-on.

I bought this CD player brand spanking new from a friend who was a Harmon Kardon wholesaler in 1994. I replaced a recently purchased Sony 5 disk CD carousel with it, which I can no longer remember the model number of. I'm surprised by the other reviews I've read here, since I have had completely trouble-free operation for 6 years, and the build quality is much better than the Sony was.

The sound seems much fuller than Sony or than my father's Onkyo, and I find it's operation straightforward and completely quirk-free.

The only downsides I have experienced are that I do not like it going into play mode whenever I power up my system (I have it plugged into my AVR30), and that it doesn't have digital outs (of course, I bought it 6 years ago), which means I will be upgrading when I buy a new pre-amp.

Overall, I found it to be highly reliable and have been very happy with the sound quality.

For anyone who cares, it's played with the following all-Harmon system (hey, if you know a wholesaler...) which I have been very pleased with (not one problem with any component in 6 years) and will be going into my bedroom when I get down to buying new equipment:

Harmon/Kardon AVR30 Integrated Amp
Harmon/Kardon FL8400 CD
Infinity Kappa 6.1 Series II Fronts
Infinity Kappa Video Series II Center
Infinity RS 325 Rears

Strength:

- Sound quality
- Optical Output

Weakness:

- Remote Control

In the beginning, I love this product but after a while it has intermittant problem, couldn't play for a long time (suddenly stop after producing noise output) and no disc message. The sound it's great. But for a collection component I don't recomment this product. For all reason I give 3 stars.

Strength:

Sound, Reliability, 4-disc changing while in play

Weakness:

Remote

I bought this refurbished through Damark 5/96 and have had trouble free operation ever since. Sound is great even without using the optical out (recently bought Nakamichi AV-8 with optical ins and will buy new cable soon).

Remote really sucks! Terrible off-axis response. Must press stupid disc button + disc # to change discs with no disc skip button.

When using program mode for recording it will leave a small dead space between songs that are back to back on the CD which is somewhat of a drag for live CDs with continuous sound between tracks.

For what I paid I couldn't be happier. Sound is still most important to me
