Bottom Line:
This is actually a 2011 product but Audio Review doesn't provide a field for that yet. The Cary CD-500 replaced a very good $1800 Arcam Diva Cd-92 that was showing it's 11 years age. The difference in playback is immediately noticeable. Where the Arcam was very forward, a little bright and in your face, the Cary CD-500 tames all those characteristics. The soundstage is moved back 5 rows or so and it is much taller and slightly wider.

The sound I hear is more realistic music, which has slowed down just a tad while producing much better pace, rhythm and timing. The pace is fairly noticeable as the Arcam tended to want to rush through every CD, causing certain jazz pieces to begin to adopt a faster, almost rock beat. Now, the nuances in the music of whatever genre are more clear. It has taken some training to get me away from the "in your face" sound of the Arcam and notice the subtle details and buried treasures in many of my CDs.

Also, the Cary CD-500 just makes every CD sound better. The abiilty to upsample every CD or listen to a HDCD at even higher quality led me to forego a potential move to a DAC and computer storage because the DACs in this player meet all the benefits of a stand alone DAC and I don't mind getting up occasionally to change a disc. Also, the remote capabilities are great, especially the ability to program listening for each CD, which the Arcam didn't have. So, I'll continue to listen and learn from the new Cary CD-500 but it was a really nice step up from the Arcam.
