Bottom Line: This is actually a review for the CD1sc, which is a newer model with a higher spec and USB/SPDIF/toslink inputs.
I play acoustic guitar and listen to a lot of live music. The CD1sc gets amazingly close to the live, natural sound of instruments and performers. In some ways, I think it's better than live with a good recording, due to the sensation of detail and intimacy presented by the player.
Forget all the audiophile blah - this player is all about music. I could listen to it forever. CDs and streamed FLAC files sound different - more natural, more detailed, more musical than any other player/DAC I've ever heard. I used to own a Droplet 5 that I enjoyed a lot, which also has a valve output stage and good reviews. There's no comparison, the Ayon just kills it. It sounds just as good through the USB input as the CD drive.
Like some reviews of Ayon CD players say, it sounds analogue - like a good turntable. No digital feeling - just real instruments being played.
I bought mine slightly used at a brilliant price and I'm a lucky man. I think this is the end of the upgrade road for me as far as sources go.

Bottom Line: This CD player provides a visceral, full-bodied presentation whereby the fullness, the palpable presence and tone that can almost mimic the real instruments it is representing is experienced. It throws a great, wide soundstage and provides full scale sound. Few CD players at this price point (ca. $3,500) can do this as well. It is exciting to listen to, but not fatiguing. Relaxed but never boring. Great CD player.
