Summary:
This cd is really unbelievable . Silky , palpable , detailed and dynamic sound makes music so real that I do not think cd sound can get any better then this . I use it together with Accuphase intergrated amp model 307 and with Dynaudios Contour 1,3 SE . The entire package is just super . I do not have one slightest negative remark . With the effect You get , even spending the relatively large amount of money isn't so painfull . I have checked a lot of gear in the last year and in the last months especially concentrating on CD /SACD options including Linn Ikemi , Meridian 588 ,Mark Levinson etc but the CD 65 V is just so much better regardless what You compare it to that there is no way to reject this option.Highly recomended !!!!

Summary:
As soon as I unpacked the Accuphase DP-65v out of the box, I knew I was in for a treat. In fact, the sheer weight of the box already hinted at the mechanical excellence of the package.
While there's never a final word on looks, even my wife -a non-tecchie person that would just as soon have B&O in the household- went "Ooooh - it's beautiful!". The exquisite velvety golden finish, the thick glass and metal panels all around, the display... This is mechanical excellence. Grnated the remote is not a very user-friendly affair, but it is also pretty to look at.

The drawer opens and closes with an authoritative, fast feel that seems to totally lock the CD in place (which is exactly what it does according to product literature). It moves on rails. Literally, if you check under the drawer...

And the sound, it is the best sound I've heard out of a CD player, and I've spent some time with players that are highly regarded... I had Denon DCD-2700 for years, tried a Krel 300, a McIntosh 7010. The Accuphase is a playful, yet disciplined virtuoso. Everything comes easy and is very musical, yet there's never an edge to it. It never seems to break a sweat while playing the most challenging passages, it simply seems to enjoy playing music in the most accurate way possible, remaining neutral and yet managing to flatter every type of music. The music simply comes across the way it was supposed to. Exactly. It is a damn serious player, but it always seems to do its work with genuine enjoyment and a smile.

You won't hear me say too much about "staging" and stuff because it's not my language or my true way of evaluating equipment. I play percussion, and to me the ultimate test is whether congas, bongos or timbales sound lively or become wearisome... well, I spent a few hours playing my congas along to the music the Accuphase was producing.

The DP-65v was supported by an Accuphase E-310v intergrated amplifier [connected with some good Japanese balanced cable, forgot the name], feeding into excellent Ceeroy (no one knows them, so I won't try) loudspeakers using Mogami cable.

I've found my perfect CD player companion.

Summary:
Given the excellent reviews that Accuphase CD players have received in the audio press, I am surprised that I am the first person to review one at this site. The DP-65V is in the middle of Accuphase's integrated CD player line. A full technical description and a nice photograph of this very attractive unit can be found at the Accuphase homepage (www.accuphase.com). My previous CD players have all been from the Sony ES series (a Japan-only unit whose model number I forget, and then the XA50ES). Since I still have the XA50ES, which I now use to dub MDs for the road, my comments about the DP-65V will be based on comparisons against this unit.
Although I still feel that the XA50ES is an excellent CD player (particularly considering its price, design, and build quality), I think that I can appreciate Don's criticism of this unit (see his comments on the XA50ES review page). Frankly, I was not expecting to hear that much of a difference between the DP-65V and the XA50ES, but the two players sound very different.

Compared with the XA50ES, the DP-65V sounds, for lack of a better word, "faster", or maybe "more agile". The treble seems somehow quieter and softer, while paradoxically also sounding clearer and more detailed -- more natural, transparent, and open. The Sony does not sound dull or warm to me, but compared with the Accuphase, the treble seems rather harsh and a bit congested.

The other remarkable difference is the superior dynamic contrast presented by the DP-65V throughout the audio band. Both microdynamics and macrodynamics are presented in an effortless manner, resulting in improved layering and greater soundstage depth. The music seems to be presented against a black velvet background or to emerge from a pool of ink. (Sorry, that probably sounds a bit "over the top"!)

Compared with the XA50ES, the bass of the DP-65V seems better controlled and tighter, but more extended and deeper. There is no midbass warmth.

In summary, the Accuphse DP-65V is an excellent CD player. The sound is effortless, transparent, open, and detailed. Both resolution and musicality, which often seem to be mutually exclusive, are outstanding. The unit manages to sound both detailed and relaxed at the same time. The DP-65V is also beautifully made, attractive, and a pleasure to operate. Finally, on a practical note, the processor section of the DP-65V can be used to decode digital signals from external sources such as a DAT deck, an MD recorder, or another CD transport by connecting these devices to the coax and optical jacks provided on the back of the unit. These external sources can be switched by the remote control. The sound of my MD deck (Sony JA22ES) is markedly improved by running it through the processor section of the DP-65V.
