Strength:

Super smooth, organic and refined sound from this High End player. Still up there with the best. Accuphase surely does something special. Expensive as hell and maybe not worth it campared to other brands. Still, you might want a Bentley even though a Mercedes will do the job. BTW, One reviewer described the sound as clinical and shrill. That is quite the opposite of my opinion of the DP-55.

Weakness:

Remote should be better at this price point. Price is on the hefty side.

This review is for Accuphase DP 55V, which is very much upgraded from DP 55. I was looking for 'my last CD player'(before SACD or DVD-A) for several month. My budget was limited to $1500. The final shortlist included Arcam FMJ 32 which had several excellent reviews in English magazines and also on this site, and Accuphase DP 55V which is only 20% more expensive than the Arcam in Japan. I made two direct comparisons, in two different shops, with my own CDs. The Accuphase is clearly in a different class. The soundstage was wider, deeper and the dynamics were incomparably better, especially regarding the bass . I listened to some live recordings, and while the Arcam sounded as a decent live recording, the Accupase sounded as if I was sitting in the audience. I know that this machine costs several times more in the US and Europe than over here, but if you have a chance, listen to it before you make a decision. My system: Accuphase DP 55V Denon PMA 2000MkII (to be replaced next) PMC FB1 speakers Wireworld Eclipse III interconnect Acrotec speaker cables Quadraspire rack, etc.
