Strength:

cheap, plays cd sometimes and, sometimes, in the actual order you want.

Weakness:

cheaply made. deafening. random play is a literal description of this device

This cd player is loud and when changing discs. It chooses when it wants to read a cd. yada yada ... it sucks

Strength:

Low price; 5 disk capability

Weakness:

Display doesn't show track and time simultaneously. Lack of direct disk access or track selection on unit (only from remote). Incompatible with my Magnavox (Philips) universal remote.

I purchased this unit mid-1999 from u-bid for about $55 including shipping. It sounds OK on my mid-fi system (Carver receiver, old AR3a speakers).

However, shortly after I began using it, it developed problems recognizing some disks- sometimes it will, sometimes it won't. If I turn the unit off and on, it usually cures the problem. Obviouly, the circuitry gets mixed up and has to be cleared. However, this is very annoying.

I find the LCD display inadequate too. Doesn't show enough info. Also, it needs more controls on the unit, in addition to the remote.

Overall, I'd have to give this a 2 rating both overall and as a value.

Strength:

It has a 5 disc setup which allows you to play a cd while you change 2 others

Weakness:

The random play often repeats the same tracks while ignoring others

It is a descent player but certainly not the best around. Wish it had 96/24 processing.

The Philips CDC735 is a decent product. I had the oppertunity to test it out today. The sound quality of it is okay. You will have to adjust the settings on your equalizer in order to get sound you truly want. Unfortunately I am unable to play run this cd player through a quality stereo setup at all. The speakers I am using are old (going on 15+ years) Sony's. I have it connected to a very cheap minisystem, one of the off brands. It is a decent cd player for the price. The construction of it is flimsy. I did pay $47 through UBid.com. You do get what you pay for. For the price I paid it will work. If you are after a very good sounding cd player, I would recommend searching elsewhere. It may sound a lot better in a different setup. When you open the tray it sounds noisy and slow. Batteries are not included, which is a downside. It seems you are unable to program it without the remote, which is palm size. Again, it is a great deal for the price but keep in mind you are getting what you pay for. In this instance, something usable and cheap. I'll give it the benifit of the benefit of the doubt and rate it a 3.

The performance of this CD player so far has been very adequate. I have played classical, jazz, and rock CDs through my Onkyo 575 AV receiver and Audes & Wharfedale speakers. The CDs all sound like they are supposed to. I have a universal remote and am able to use all functions for the player, except you can not power it off from the remote directly - one problem. FOR 42.00 ON UBID YOU CAN NOT EXPECT ANY BETTER. But certainly keep in mind that you get what you pay for, but I am very satisfied so far!!!

The 735 is the cheapest 5 cd player made. They didn't even place most commonly used functions on the player (cost savings by only having on the remote). As far as the sound, It can only be described as non-dynamic. I got it for 37$ from UBID + 15 shipping = 52$. It not only did not meet expectations (admititedly high for 52$), but was also defective in that it would not read more than a track or two. UBID did accept the return and credited price plus shipping. Don't expect more than what you pay for!
