Review 1 of 2

Price Paid:  $1300.00 from Audiogon

Summary:
A superb turntable. As precise as a Michell Gyro and as musical as an LP12. I could not care less if some owners are not able to cue the tomearm. The sound is of prime importance in this design. Just be gentle with the tonearm and the suspension behaves perfectly. Phillistines need not buy, but music lovers will cherish this deck. I have used a Kontrapunkt B on this deck with a Michell upgraded counterweight RB300 and internal silver wiring, and the sound quality is awesome. I paid over 3000 ponds for a Sony SCD-1 and it only just beats it.

Strengths:
mechanically silent deck, very collectable retro piece of vinyl asylum. Lucid, open and airy

Weaknesses:
Not quite as refined as an SME20/SMEV ;-)

Review 2 of 2

Summary:
After dissing the MK 1 version of the turntable in October of 98, I later upgraded the table to MK II. This upgrade has made all the difference. The flat belt stays on (most of the time) and the quirks with the cueing mechanism, well let's just say I've learned to live with them. The tonearm still seems to be weighted down somewhat, causing the stylus of my Goldring Excel to bend slightly. Despite this, the sound is wonderful. Rock solid and a tad reserved, but luxurious and open. In fact, I swear it sounds better and better the more its played.

Magnepan Magneplanar MG 1.6 User Review

In my judgment the advantage of the MG 1.6 (and other Magneplars), stems from the following: = It is a full-range dipole, and = It has uses low-mass, planar drivers for the whole audio spectrum. These attributes account for its extraordinary clarity, coherence, “air”...
