Bottom Line:
Very similar to a Thorens TD2001. Take the stock 2001, remove TP90 tonearm (an excellent arm by the way) and cueing mechanism, remove plexiglas lid (major source of resonance), replace 5mm thick rubber mat (originally designed for double leaf TD320 suspension but IMO too heavy for single leaf P3 suspension) substitute with felt or thinner Thorens mat like the one from TD160S which is perfect for TD2001 suspension; install ARO or another top quality arm. Voila - you have a base P3 which basically shares the Thorens plinth, bearing, platter hardware, motor, drive mechanism and electronics. Replacing the Thorens power supply will of course upgrade the performance, but that is true of any table. I think the TD2001 is one of Thorens best turntable. Here's why: It is one of a handful of models built in the 90s at the end of Thorens golden era that uses the RDS Widia brass bearing (along with the TD320 mkIII, TD3001 among others). The bearing is mirror finished just like the Linn and bigger too (10mm vs. 9mm). The TD2001 also uses a substantial 48 step Berger Lahr DC stepper motor (operates in principle like a 48 pole ac synchronous motor) superior in many ways to the ubiquitous Airpax/Premotec 9904. No wonder the P3 sounds so good - it has all these goodies from the Thorens TD2001/3001.

Bottom Line:
The Phonosophie P3 is an very special turntable. It is an modified Thorens turntable with a lot of changes who let this turntable be a reference-model for a couple of years. The sound becomes more LIVE and dynamicly.
