Strength:

Build like a truck, power, power, power. many in and outputs. 2nhand very cheap ( it is a philips unow )

Weakness:

rather large ( no toroid ), it is really integrated so you can't use it as a pre-amp ,

Huge massive amplifier (FA960) i did also own a FA930 with Hdam technique , but this one is much more stabile and more important it don't go down with a massive bass like eminem... But nevertheless i am a philips fan for all times and as you can see this thing built it is surely built by marantz. On my Philips FB821 speakers with the isophase tweeter ( ribbon like ) the speakers very come alive my old amp is a JVC 502 receiver and with some loud music, the lights from the amp went down, and some serious clipping occurred.

This review is for the Philips FA960 integrated amplifier :

This hefty amplifier Philips launched in the mid 80’s was part of a complete top of the range system intended to support the new CD format; this bring us back in 1982/83 when you could see many advertisements from Audio companies and which rather sounded like a threat : CD can provide a such impressive dynamic range that it will blow your amp and speakers, then you’d better buy a new « ready for digital »hi-fi set-up: pretty stupid but I do remember many friends ready to purchase a CD player asking me whether this statement must be taken seriously or not.
FA960 integrated amplifier was quite special if not unique in the Philips audio history at that time: rather weighty (15kg), high quality built, high power (120wpc) based on Mosfet technology, fitted with a really good phono board (MC/MM), 4 gang Alps volume potentiometer, etc…not difficult to guess: it ‘s a Marantz making.
When incorporated into my modest system it literally awoke my old Ditton 44, by adding authoritative slam into the bottom end and a far more refined and transparent clarity in the upper frequencies. Air, light and space I’ve been missing so far were simply there.
Nevertheless, this is not a perfect amp; there’s a slightly dry and nasal character in the upper mid ; this was not a problem with my Ditton because they always managed to blur this into a warm and rounded musical picture, but this additional “colour” was also commented by a friend who borrowed it for a while, compared with his YBA integré. And it comes even more obvious to me with neutral and revealing loudspeakers such as ATC monitors when compared with the Marantz PM17 mk2 which replaced it now.
Anyhow, this is not enough to challenge the FA960 other virtues and it therefore would be interesting to compare it in a blind test with Mid-end so-called “audiophile “amp.
Suffice to say, it deserves a serious audition, assuming this must be easily found as a good bargain in the second hand market.

Strength:

Simple to use, very high quality reproduction, power, fuzzy logic control

Weakness:

None, really !

I have purchased this amp with other 900 series components like cassete deck and the CD player, all connected through an ESI Bus which makes the behave like an integrated system. The amp is very musical, somewhat brighter though. The soundstage, separation, distortion are excellent and too good for a product at this price. Power is sufficient and never distorts at high output. Protection of speakers and the amp itself is legendary through a fuzzy logic control, where it brings down the volume before clipping takes place.
